Flau'jae Johnson is playing her third year with the LSU Tigers. She is enjoying her best season in college, averaging 20.0 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.7 steals.
As a sophomore, Johnson averaged 14.9 points per game. On Thursday, ESPN revealed that his 5.1 ppg increase is the largest scoring increase by an SEC player who averaged at least 10+ ppg last season.
"The only way is up for Flau’jae‼️," the caption read.
The LSU guard's step-father, Ameen Brooks, commented on this, writing:
"#1 pick hands down 🤧."
The guard turns 22 in November and hence is eligible for the 2025 WNBA draft. After winning the NCAA championship in her freshman season, Johnson is leading the Tigers on another potential title run. LSU is undefeated this season with a 20-0 overall record and 5-0 in the SEC.
In an interview with Sports Illustrated in October, Flau'jae Johnson shared her goals for this season.
"I really wanna win the national championship," she said. "I felt it before but I wanna lead my team to win. Like I feel like if I don't win another championship, it's gonna be a failure for me. I like to just shoot for the moon and work really hard and try to see where I land."
Flau'jae Johnson once revealed her special condition for leaving college early
While one-and-done is extremely common in men's college basketball, female players usually stay all four years due to eligibility rules in the WNBA. With Flau'jae Johnson meeting the criteria a year early, the guard shared that she was willing to leave college early, but under one condition.
In a July 2024 episode of her Best of Both Worlds podcast, Johnson and her mother, Kia Brooks were discussing the guard's professional plans when she said:
"I would consider leaving college early to the pros. Like, say this year I had a amazing year, and they was like, 'Flau, you going No. 1', I'm out."
However, Flau'jae Johnson's mother disagreed, saying:
"Yes, I love it. I love it for you. I love the process. I don't want you to miss anything. The WNBA is looking like a little rough. I want you to go ahead and get your weight up. I feel like you're good, but those are women out there. And I want you to be all the way, a full-fledged woman before you go out there."
While these decisions will be made only in April, Johnson is now focused on her season. The Tigers are set to play a high-stakes clash against South Carolina on Thursday and Flau'jae Johnson will play a key role.
