The No. 2 South Carolina Gamecocks and Dawn Staley are preparing for their Sunday clash against No. 5 Texas. In the pregame presser, the coach was asked about her personal record against Longhorns coach Vic Schaefer, which is at 13-3.

Reacting to the number, the $12 million worth Staley (per CelebrityNetWorth) said:

"Damn, those three losses." (00:41)

Both teams are on an incredible run in 2024-25, with the Gamecocks coming off a 90-49 win over Texas A&M and the Longhorns with an 84-40 triumph over Alabama. Texas ranks second (16-1) in the Southeastern Conference standings while South Carolina is third (15-1).

With this heavy-weight clash, fans are tuned in to see who will gain the lead in the conference standings. With the high stakes, Dawn Staley was asked to name the biggest aspect of the Longhorns that South Carolina needs to stop.

“I mean, their ability to control the paint. Their bigs are good; their guards are good," she said. "In Vic (Schaefer)'s heyday here in the SEC, he controlled the paint – and it’s not going to change.
"You can win a lot of basketball games when you win the paint, so we got to win that battle. And then rebounding – rebounding is going to be key for us.”

Dawn Staley goes into the specifics of individual players

Leading the Longhorns from the front is sophomore forward Madison Booker, who is averaging 15.3 points, 5.9 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.3 steals. When asked about her strategy to slow down Booker, Dawn Staley said (01:15):

“You got to make it difficult for her to catch. She’s in great shape, as well – a lot better shape than she was last year. I think she’s just understanding college and the whole dynamics of your body. It’s hard – just make it real hard before the catch because, when she catches it, you’re at her mercy.”

However, the Gamecocks are also seeing a rise in contributions from several players. After a long stretch of subpar performances, forward Sakima Walker played an important role in South Carolina's win over the Aggies. Commenting on her, Dawn Staley said:

"Kima’s fearless. Kima is a relentless defender. I know we don’t see her offensive skillset a whole lot, but she can score – she really can score. She needs more time. She needs more actual game time in order for her to do that.
"When you’re playing with so many great players who have years of service under us, it’s hard to break into that. But one of them’s out of the way now – it’s time for her to step up.

The tip-off against Texas is the first of a five-game stretch against ranked teams in the SEC for South Carolina.
