RJ Davis leads UNC past SMU

RJ Davis led the Tar Heels to a solid 82-67 win over visiting SMU on Tuesday, dropping 26 points and shooting efficiently at 8-for-15, including 3-for-6 from beyond the arc.

"I think I did a good job taking what the defense gave me," he said after the game. "I hit my open shots."

Shortly after making one of his toughest shots, Davis found himself in an unexpected situation. On defense, he took a headbutt to the nose from Matt Cross, causing a lot of blood to flow.

That moment reflected the challenges Davis has faced this season. Before the game, he was averaging just 17.7 points per game while shooting 38%, including just 27% from three-point range. This was a significant drop from last season when he shot 42.8% overall and 39.9% from deep.

"This year has been an adjustment for me," Davis said. "It’s been mentally tough to stay focused and in the moment."

But Davis showed his leadership on Tuesday in more ways than just scoring. He grabbed five rebounds, dished out four assists and had only one turnover. Twice, he drove into the lane and sank his signature soft floater.

After Washington blocked a shot, Davis sprinted down the court and scored through contact for an and-one play. He also contributed on defense, filling gaps and securing two steals. It was classic RJ Davis — playing his game and making it look effortless.
