South Carolina Gamecocks coach Dawn Staley was featured on the cover image of the SLAM magazine on May 30. Not only was the three-time NCAAW championship winner the focal personality of the issue, but she also became the muse for SLAM's other merchandise line.
The sports-covering magazine company released two different types of Staley-related merchandise for fans. One was a white tee where Staley sat on a chair with a basketball under her forearm. Another was a black T-shirt with the same print as the white one.
When Dawn saw that SLAM was promoting the T-shirt, she couldn't stop herself from inspiring her fans to buy the merchandise.
Dawn Staley tweeted:
"I have to say I agree! Who’s got theirs?!!"
This is not the first time the South Carolina HC has asked fans to buy out her merchandise item. She urged fans to buy her Virginia Cavaliers jersey on June 30 as well. She wrote:
"Any (Dawn Staley) fans in the building? We’ve got an exciting launch coming soon. Proceeds will directly support NIL efforts for student-athletes."
Dawn Staley revealed her thoughts behind why she played in the WNBA while coaching at the same time
As per the SLAM magazine issue, Dawn Staley wanted to experience playing basketball as a player but also wanted to understand the pressure of teaching it to students.
Therefore, when she was given the opportunity to play in the WNBA while simultaneously coaching a basketball team, she took it u[ without hesitation. She said, as per the SLAM website:
"One of the most gratifying moments of my life was to be able to play and then be able to coach all at the same time. Because it played on both sides of my brain and the passion was on full display.
"If any of the younger players in the WNBA ever have the opportunity to do both, they would find that it’s so fulfilling. You’re able to get out the aggression of playing while also being a dream merchant for younger players and giving them an experience that you are actually living."
She continued:
"A lot of coaches have to go back in time to that place when they were playing, but when you’re able to do it in real time, it is an automatic respect from your players because they know you’re doing the very thing that you’re asking them to do and to be disciplined at."
Her coaching-kickstart allowed her to gain valuable experiences and come out as one of the top coaches in the women's college basketball scene.
