Nearly a month after hailing Breanna Stewart's GOAT status, Dawn Staley displayed a heartwarming gesture involving the New York Liberty forward's daughter. During Liberty's game against the Indiana Fever, the South Carolina Gamecocks coach affectionately offered a scholarship to Stewart's 2-year-old baby girl, Ruby.
The moment came after Breanna Stewart lifted her squad to a 3-0 season-opening record behind a game-high 24 points against the Fever. After the game, Dawn Staley jokingly "offers" Ruby a chance to play for her as baby Stewart rests in her mother's arms while donning a pair of Puma Stewie 3s, Stewart's signature shoes.
Ruby will have to wait more than a decade to bank on Dawn Staley's proposal, so it is hard to say if Staley will still be with the Gamecocks when the day arrives. However, the exchange highlights two of the biggest names in women's basketball forging a potential alignment in the future.
Stewart, who entered the WNBA as the first pick in the 2016 draft, is one of the most decorated players in the league. She already has two WNBA championships, two league and Finals MVPs, and five All-WNBA First Team selections to her name.
Moreover, she has replicated the same success on the global as well. She garnered 5 gold medals during age-restricted FIBA tournaments. And after making it to the main Team USA women's roster, she helped her nation to two Olympic golds and three FIBA World Cup gold medal runs.
Dawn Staley gets Breanna Stewart's vote as GOAT
Days before Dawn Staley lifted her third NCAA title as a coach by defeating Caitlin Clark and Iowa, the 54-year-old coach continued her push for Breanna Stewart in the GOAT debate.
Staley highlighted Breanna Stewart's 4 NCAA titles that she garnered with the UConn Huskies (2012-2016). The coach cited that her immense team success, coupled with her individual accolades, makes her the GOAT in her eyes.
"We're going to talk about GOATs, I think she's the GOAT, to be able to win four national championships and to be MVP. I think she was MVP all four times," Staley said.
Stewart had a glittering college career at UConn. Per Sports-Reference, her total of 2,676 points ranks second in school history behind only Maya Moore, and her 1,179 rebounds during her time in the program is fourth. Moreover, her 414 blocks remains a school record.
