The 2024-25 college basketball season is less than a month away and the All-SEC preseason teams were released on Monday. While the Southeastern Conference is known to dominate the football landscape, they had nine teams ranked in the preseason AP Top 25 Poll – the most of any conference.
Here's a closer look at five players who received first-team All-SEC honors.
5 players named to 2024-25 preseason first-team All-SEC
#1. Mark Sears
Mark Sears initially joined the Ohio Bobcats as a three-star prospect in the 2020 recruiting class. He joined the No. 2 Alabama Crimson Tide via the transfer portal after two seasons. Sears has averaged 16.2 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.4 steals and 0.1 blocks per game while shooting 45.9% from the field, 38.8% from 3-point range and 86.3% from the free throw line in his four-year collegiate career.
He averaged 21.5 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 4.0 apg, 1.6 spg and 0.1 bpg while shooting 50.8% from the field, 43.6% from 3-point range and 85.7% from the free throw line last season. He earned consensus second-team All-American and first-team All-SEC honors.
#2. Johni Broome
Johni Broome initially joined the Morehead State Eagles as a three-star prospect in the 2020 recruiting class. He joined the No. 11 Auburn Tigers via the transfer portal ahead of the 2022-23 season. Broome has averaged 15.4 ppg, 9.1 rpg, 1.4 assists, 0.8 spg and 2.6 bpg in 26.4 mpg while shooting 54.9% from the field, 32.2% from 3-point range and 60.8% from the free throw line in his four-year collegiate career.
He averaged 16.5 ppg, 8.5 rpg, 2.2 apg, 0.9 spg and 2.2 bpg in 24.8 mpg while shooting 54.8% from the field, 35.4% from 3-point range and 61.5% from the free throw line last season. He earned third-team All-American and first-team All-SEC honors.
#3. Walter Clayton Jr.
Walter Clayton Jr. initially joined the Iona Gaels as an unranked prospect in the 2021 recruiting class. He joined the No. 21 Florida Gators via the transfer portal ahead of last season. Clayton Jr. has averaged 14.0 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 2.5 apg, 1.2 apg and 0.5 bpg in 26.0 mpg while shooting 44.1% from the field, 38.5% from 3-point range and 88.1% from the free throw line in his three-year collegiate career.
In his first season with the Gators, he averaged 17.6 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 2.6 apg, 1.1 spg and 0.6 bpg while shooting 43.2% from the field, 36.5% from 3-point range and 87.7% from the free throw line last season. He earned second-team All-SEC honors.
#4. Wade Taylor IV
Wade Taylor IV joined the No. 13 Texas A&M Aggies as a four-star prospect in the 2021 recruiting class. He has averaged 14.3 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 3.3 apg, 1.6 spg and 0.1 bpg in 26.0 mpg while shooting 36.9% from the field, 32.4% from 3-point range and 84.6% from the free throw line in his three-year collegiate career.
Taylor averaged 19.1 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 4.0 apg and 1.8 spg while shooting 36.6% from the field, 32.5% from 3-point range and 84.7% from the free throw line last season. He earned first-team All-SEC honors.
#5. Zakai Zeigler
Zakai Zeigler joined the No. 12 Tennessee Volunteers as a three-star prospect in the 2021 recruiting class. He has averaged 10.4 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 4.7 apg, 1.8 spg and 0.1 bpg in 27.5 mpg while shooting 38.4% from the field, 33.5% from 3-point range and 78.2% from the free throw line in his three-year collegiate career.
Zeigler averaged 11.8 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 6.1 apg, 1.7 spg and 0.1 bpg while shooting 39.3% from the field, 34.4% from 3-point range and 70.6% from the free throw line last season. He earned first-team All-SEC honors while being named the SEC Defensive Player of the Year.
