Tennessee stays on top in latest AP Top 25 poll
The Tennessee Volunteers solidified their position as the top team in Division I men's college basketball on Monday, remaining at No. 1 in the AP Top 25 after two big wins, including a dominant performance over SEC rival Arkansas. The Volunteers are now the only undefeated team in the nation.
After a 76-52 victory over No. 23 Arkansas and a win against Norfolk State, Tennessee improved to 14-0, matching the third-longest winning streak in school history.
The Vols picked up four additional first-place votes, securing 45 out of 60 total votes to remain in the top spot for the fifth consecutive week. Auburn, with 15 first-place votes, stayed at No. 2, while Iowa State, Duke and Alabama rounded out the unchanged top five.
Tennessee’s play this season has been impressive, with only one game where they didn’t win by double digits.
"They're the No. 1 team in the country for a reason," Arkansas coach John Calipari, acknowledging how well the Vols controlled the game against the Razorbacks, said.
Tennessee coach Rick Barnes also credited his players for the success:
"Good families. They come in knowing what we expect, but they expect it from themselves too. It’s a message that we emphasize daily."
Meanwhile, Kentucky’s win over Florida pushed it up four spots to No. 6, followed by Marquette, Florida, UConn and Texas A&M, which beat Texas for its eighth straight victory.
The SEC once again topped all conferences with nine ranked teams, including three in the top five and six in the top 10. The Big Ten followed with six teams in the rankings, while the Big 12 had four and the Big East had two — both of which were in the top 10.
The ACC, West Coast Conference, American Athletic Conference and Mountain West each had one team in the poll.
