Rutgers freshman Ace Bailey came under heavy criticism from fans after a critic posted four different videos showing him missing his shots on X (formerly Twitter). The first clip was during the Scarlet Knights' 75-63 loss to the Wisconsin Badgers on Jan.7, while the other three clips came from the loss to Purdue.
The critic, @JMannTakes, is a Duke podcast host. He posted the Bailey clips on Friday, with the caption:
"Ace Bailey shot selection makes me want to throw my laptop."
Fans headed to the comment section to react to the videos. Some fans agreed with the critic, expressing their disappointment in Ace Bailey's displays.
"No NBA team is going to want him to join and do this s**t," a fan wrote.
"Terrible.. but when you’re a bucket you put that thing up. Period. Especially for a team that’s middle of the pack," another fan wrote.
"These were the exact types of shots people were lauding as ‘NBA Shotmaking’ earlier this season lol," a fan commented.
One fan compared him to a former NBA player known for his questionable shot selection.
"JR Smith part deux," the fan wrote.
On the other hand, other fans disagreed with the critic's opinion about Bailey, with some arguing that college basketball was the perfect platform for the highly rated freshman to be a better player in the NBA.
"These shots will make him a better player in the league, I think him and Harper are using college to just work on their game…I don’t think wining is the goal for them two, I may be waaay off but that’s just how I see it," a fan commented.
"It’s all a learning process. I’m sure he’s made these shots over and over before so he thinks he can make them at anytime," a fan wrote.
Ace Bailey reacts to Rutgers's loss to Purdue
The Rutgers Scarlet Knights lost 68-50 to the No. 20 Purdue Boilermakers in front of their home fans inside the Jersey Mike’s Arena on Thursday night. Ace Bailey led Rutgers with 17 points and nabbed seven rebounds but it was not enough to inspire a home win.
Rutgers committed 12 first-half turnovers, which led to nine points for Purdue. The Boilermakers ended the half with a 33-24 lead, despite just shooting 2-of-13 from three-point range.
Following the loss, Bailey addressed the press in the postgame press conference.
"I mean this game, I mean we got, like coach [Steve] Pikiell said, we go a long season ahead of us. I mean I was in the pass in the past. I mean I wish we could have won it, but um, move on. We got another ranked team tomorrow, I mean not tomorrow but next," he said. (0:09)
"So be looking forward to play UCLA as our next game."
The Scarlet Knights have now lost three in a row and four of their last five. They are now 0-6 against Quad 1 opponents. Rutgers now sits at 8-8 on the season, leaving their NCAA Tournament on a downhill slope.
Ace Bailey and the Knights will look to bounce back against the equally struggling UCLA Bruins in their next matchup on Monday.
