Alabama basketball star Grant Nelson announced his return to the Crimson Tide for the upcoming season, which will also be his final year of college eligibility. Nelson will enter his second season at Alabama following his move from North Dakota State last year.
The 6-foot-11 forward made headlines on Thursday, though not for basketball, but for making an appearance in a $4 million music video for four-time Grammy Award-nominated rapper Gunna. Nelson is featured in Gunna's single 'One of Wun', also the title track of his fifth studio album.
The music video was filmed at the Overtime Elite Arena in Atlanta, Georgia which also included several other college basketball stars like Notre Dame's Tyran Stokes, St. John Bosco's Brandon McCoy Jr and USC's Isaiah Elohim. The song is 3 minutes and 49 seconds long and the lyrics focus on Gunna's determination to achieve success despite challenges.
Grant Nelson organizes basketball camp for youth
Nelson hosted a one-day basketball camp for local youth at Tuscaloosa County High School on June 23. Over hundred campers attended the event, where Nelson along with a group of volunteers led a series of drills and skill-building exercises.
"I knew I wanted to do something in the area. Give back to these kids for all the support they’ve shown me throughout my time at Alabama," Grant Nelson said after the camp. "I just think it’s great to get out here and give back to the community and my agency helped me out with this got me in contact with some people in the area and everything worked out perfectly."
"I just want them to have fun. Come out here, get a little bit of basketball experience," Nelson added. "Hear from a guy who's done it in college for a couple years and over everything. I just want them to have a good time."
Nelson began his career at North Dakota as a freshman where he earned accolades such as the Summit League Sixth Man of the Year award with 6.3 points and 3.7 rebounds per game.
He continued to excel as he transitioned into a starting role during his sophomore year at Alabama. Alabama reached the NCAA Final Four for the first time in the program's history last season, thanks to Grant Nelson's dominant performance averaging 11.9 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game. In 2023, Nelson earned a spot on the All-Summit First Team and All-Summit Defensive Team.
