Albany freshman admits intimidation factor before facing Kim Mulkey, LSU Tigers: "I'm not too nervous"

The UAlbany women’s basketball team will close out their 2024 campaign with a matchup against the undefeated No. 6 Kim Mulkey's LSU Tigers. Freshman guard Delanie Hill stood out during the week, earning Rookie of the Week honors with an average of 7.0 points, 2.5 assists, and 1.5 steals per game in a 1-1 stretch.

The Tigers are headlined by stars like Flau’Jae Johnson, who averages 20.9 points per game, and Aneesah Morrow, a dominant presence with averages of 18.3 points and 14 rebounds. Before the game, in an interview, Hill said:

“I think it is a little [intimidating], but, I mean, it’s basketball — we all do the same thing. I’m excited. I’m not too nervous. "

She also said:

"I think it’ll be a great game. We know what we have to do, and I think we’ll be just fine.”

Earlier, the UAlbany game followed a matchup against Wisconsin, where the Great Danes fought before falling in a tightly contested 10-point loss. Despite the defeat, UAlbany showed resilience, leading 47-44 after three quarters. Hill played 31 minutes against Wisconsin, contributing six points, four assists, and two steals.

Kim Mulkey's LSU Tigers and UAlbany are creating high stakes

The LSU women’s basketball team is closing in on the conclusion of its non-conference schedule with the start of SEC play in the new year. Kim Mulkey’s Tigers begin with a 14-0 record under their belt this season.

On the other hand, the game against LSU is part of UAlbany’s non-conference “buy game” series, which has provided funding for the program. Now, the Great Danes are traveling to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, for the game. On this, Mullen shared:

“That allows you to just go out there and play loose. But, like, crazier things have happened. There’s a chance. There’s always a chance, right?”

“But this is a very talented team, and for us to defeat them on their home court, we would have to be the absolute best version of ourselves to pull out a victory.”

The Great Danes will receive $35,000, plus covered hotel expenses, for participating in the matchup. Earlier this season, the team secured $25,000 from their game against Wisconsin and $20,000 from Syracuse.
