The LSU Tigers have the best conference players in Aneesah Morrow and Flau’jae Johnson after star player Angel Reese's departure to the WNBA.
The duo share Preseason SEC Player of the Year and are expected to take on a bigger role this year. Johnson and Morrow were also named to the preseason All-SEC First Team.
Even though Morrow takes her consideration seriously, she plans on repeating things from her previous season. Under Kim Mulkey, she is determined to maintain her competitive spirit with Johnson.
"I would say just the media honors for me, just trying to stay motivated with my team," Morrow said on her SEC Media Day appearance.
"Me and Flau'jae gonna challenge each other every day like we did last year with steals and just on the floor. So, just continuing to challenge each other and work hard," she added. (1:15)
Last season, Flau’jae Johnson and Aneesah Morrow had a bet that required the winner to have more steals.
Morrow came into college basketball with a certain pride around her ability to pester and bait guards.
On the other hand, Johnson’s determination to win the bet saw her defensive acumen spike up. Morrow led LSU with 2.5 steals per game. Johnson recorded her best stretch in the category, with 2.1 steals per game.
Aneesah Morrow's biggest defensive outing came against the Kent State Golden Flashes, where she recorded nine steals. Flau'jae Johnson's most steals came against the Texas A&M Aggies behind six interceptions.
Kim Mulkey wants Aneesah Morrow to be LSU's leader
As Morrow enters her last year of eligibility, Kim Mulkey expects her to step into a leadership role. The coach wants Morrow to be more verbal on both ends of the floor.
"She (Mulkey) told me she wants me to be more of a vocal leader,” Morrow said in an interview with the Bengal Tiger.
“She knows that I lead by example and my teammates will follow, but she wants me to be more verbal. And that's something I've been working on in practice. I've gotten a lot better at it, actually," she added.
Morrow has been one of the most consistent players in college basketball. Be it playing her initial two years at DePaul Blue Demons or a campaign with Angel Reese, she has averaged a double-double in every season.
