Dan Hurley and Kim Mulkey are two of the best coaches in college basketball today. They have won a combined six NCAA titles, leading UConn, Baylor, and LSU to championship runs in their illustrious coaching careers.
Apart from winning, Hurley and Mulkey are both known for their fiery personalities on the court. Hurley's recent referee flare-ups in the games against Memphis and Colorado at the Maui Invitational led one X (formerly Twitter) user to compare the UConn coach to Mulkey.
"Dan Hurley is just Kim Mulkey without being dressed like Elton John."
That post went viral, with the comparison drawing mixed reactions from fans.
"He is also a bigger prick than her," one user claimed.
"He just won back to back men’s national championships and turned down multiple millions from the Lakers who aggressively pursued him. No. Another unwitting misinformation campaign," another fan pointed out.
Here are some other tweets:
"That’s a sh*t comparison," one fan replied.
"Pathetic attempt to tear down a true leader of men. Shame on you," another fan chimed in.
"Don't disrespect Miss Kim like that!," one user posted.
"Titles. They win titles," another user wrote.
"Disagree, Ryan. I think Hurley is annoying too.. but if one of his national championship players got arrested & held in Russia for something small, he would fly there like a movie from the Taken series," one fan tweeted.
Dan Hurley, Kim Mulkey grab headlines with on-court actions in 2024-25 season
Hurley clashed several times with referees in Hawaii, arguing that the Huskies were on the wrong end of officiating mistakes in the latter stages of their losses to Memphis and Colorado.
Hurley picked up a technical foul with 40.3 seconds left in the game against the Tigers after complaining about an over-the-back foul called on Liam McNeeley. Memphis scored four free throws after that as UConn went on to lose 99-97.
The referees drew the ire of Hurley once more in the game against Colorado. He argued that an over-the-back foul should have been called on Trevor Baskin during a rebounding tussle with McNeeley.
The no-call proved to be decisive, with the Buffaloes scoring the eventual game-winner in the ensuing possession.
Mulkey's on-court actions were also under the spotlight recently, picking up a technical foul in LSU's 95-44 win over Eastern Kentucky. She complained about a charging foul call on star player Flau'jae Johnson with 8:15 remaining in the fourth quarter.
