Immanuel Quickley is set to sign a new contract with the Toronto Raptors, fulfilling the prophetic words of John Calipari during his recruitment. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the guard is set to ink a five-year deal worth $175 million, which is his second contract.
While recruiting Quickley for Kentucky in 2017, one of the pitches of John Calipari to the guard and his player's family was building him to go on and get a second contract in the NBA. The coach boasted that most of his recruits have achieved that feat in the league.
“The kids that I'm recruiting, most of them have a four to five-year window,” Calipari said. “Your academic window is 15 years and your basketball window is four to five years. You may say ‘What's four to five years?’ Doesn't mean you have to leave after a year, but you may.
“Within that window, you have to do your college thing, get drafted & establish who you are. Because the first contract—it's the second one. That's why my guys go to the league and get the second contract,” he added.
The new mega contract with the Raptors is a fulfillment of Calipari's promise to Quickley during his recruiting process years ago. The guard was selected as the 25th overall pick by the New York Knicks in the 2020 NBA Draft.
John Calipari recently boasted about his recruit's success in the NBA
What John Calipari has successfully done over the years is send players to the NBA, who in turn go on to have a brilliant career in the league. The coach boasts a whole lot of players who have secured significant contracts in the NBA and he is very proud of that achievement.
In a recent appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” John Calipari proudly discussed his impact on players' careers in the NBA while talking about recruiting. He highlighted his significant role in developing top stars for the professional level, citing impressive figures they’ve signed.
“70% of the players that we've recruited in the last 15 years have been drafted,” Calipari said. "73% of those 70% have gotten to second contacts. I believe 30% of the max contract in the NBA are my guys. Our kids have earned over $5 billion without endorsements, just NBA contracts,” he added.
John Calipari is expected to continue recruiting some of the best prospects at Arkansas. The coach joined the Razorbacks this offseason following a 15-year tenure at Kentucky. The program has already provided him the necessary tools to recruit well and succeed in the job.
