Azzi Fudd and the UConn Huskies returned to winning ways on Sunday, beating the Providence Friars 67-41 in their Big East showdown at the XL Center. Two players scored in double figures for the Huskies, who finished the year with an 11-2 record.
UConn defeated Providence despite a low-scoring performance from Fudd. She finished the game with eight points, one assist and one steal. Fudd played 24 minutes in her first start since suffering a knee sprain in UConn's win over Louisville on Dec. 7.
Fudd struggled to find her shooting stroke, making just three of her 11 field-goal attempts against the Friars. She went 2-for-6 from beyond the arc in her return to the starting lineup. Fudd scored all of her points in the first half.
Below are her stats from the game against Providence.
Paige Bueckers picks up scoring slack amid Azzi Fudd's eight-point effort
This was the fifth time this season that Azzi Fudd failed to score in double figures for the No. 7 UConn Huskies. She went scoreless against the USC Trojans in her first game back from injury, missing all four of her field-goal attempts in eight minutes of action on Dec. 21.
Fortunately for the Huskies, Paige Bueckers and Sarah Strong picked up the slack on the offensive end. Bueckers led the team in scoring with 23 points, going 8-for-12 from the field. She added four rebounds and four assists for the Huskies, who improved their home record to 6-1.
Bueckers wreaked havoc in the first half, recording 19 points during that stretch. She got the party started for UConn with a 14-point explosion in the first quarter, helping the Huskies grab a commanding 28-6 advantage after the opening 10 minutes of play. Bueckers now have nine 20-point games this season. She is 14th in the nation in scoring, averaging 20.9 points through 13 games.
Strong also delivered in the win over Providence, scoring 14 points and grabbing two rebounds. She shot 6-for-11 from the field, including 1-of-4 from beyond the arc. She also displayed her defensive prowess, recording two steals and one block against the Friars.
