In her first starting lineup appearance since Nov. 12, 2023, Azzi Fudd helped UConn in its 88-52 blowout of the Holy Cross Crusaders. Fudd's return to the starting lineup allowed her to serve as senior star Paige Bueckers' second option again, earning the Huskies their seventh straight win to start the season.
Playing for 18 minutes, Fudd contributed seven points on 3-for-6 shooting, including a 3-pointer, to go along with one rebound, one assist and two steals. This was a positive sign for the Huskies and their fans, as the fourth-year standout looks to earn more minutes as the year progresses.
Her first stat tally came at the 7:07 mark of the first quarter with a steal, setting the tone for the kind of contribution she would make throughout the game. She connected on a layup midway through the period to tie the game at 5-5 in what was, at the time, a tightly contested matchup.
Azzi Fudd's contributions on rebounding and defense helped UConn hold a narrow 11-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter was more of the same for the 5-foot-11 guard, as her defense and positioning helped UConn maintain its advantage. Her only field goal of the quarter came at the 2:03 mark with a layup. The Huskies entered halftime leading 33-27.
Fudd forced another Crusaders turnover at the 7:15 mark of the third quarter, leading to a Kaitlyn Chen layup assisted by Fudd to put the Huskies up 43-32. After a timeout by Holy Cross, Fudd drained a 3-pointer following a missed Crusaders attempt.
With a steady lead, UConn extended its advantage to 18 points, leading 57-39 heading into the final quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Fudd didn’t add to her stat line, but the Huskies pulled away to secure an 88-52 win in her return to the starting lineup.
Below are Azzi Fudd's stats from the game.
Sarah Strong shines with season-high as Azzi Fudd returns to UConn's starting lineup vs Holy Cross
While much of the buzz centered on Azzi Fudd's return to UConn’s starting lineup, freshman standout Sarah Strong stole the show in the Huskies’ dominant win over the Crusaders. Strong posted.
Strong posted her season-high in points, scoring 22 while corralling down seven boards, dishing out two assists and swiping the ball twice.
Whether it’s Strong continuing to shine or Fudd finding her rhythm as she gets more minutes, this season's UConn Huskies team is deep, and they'll aim to showcase that depth again on Saturday against the Louisville Cardinals in the Barclays Center.
