The UConn Huskies visited Omaha, Nebraska, to take on the Creighton Bluejays in a Big East matchup on Saturday. In a record-breaking attendance for the Bluejays, one fan in particular walked away with a significant cash prize.
Let it Fly Sports Bar, a local business in Omaha that sponsors Creighton's basketball program, ran a promotion where fans who could make a half-court shot during a timeout would win $7,000.
A fan named Patrick Totzke attempted this seemingly impossible feat. While he missed the first attempt, he grabbed the rebound, stepped back and sank the half-court shot as the timer expired, much to the delight of the roaring crowd.
The Bluejays uploaded a clip of the incredible moment across their platforms, with the video garnering thousands of views.
It was already a special night for the Creighton women's basketball team, who set a new attendance record with 11,414 fans packing the CHI Health Center Omaha, breaking the previous record of 4,439.
Although the Bluejays play their home game at DJ Sokol Arena, which has a capacity of just around 3,000, the program utilized the men's basketball arena—located about 1.2 miles away—for marquee matchups against the visiting UConn Huskies to accommodate the larger crowd.
Creighton suffers its first conference defeat as UConn prevails
Despite all the excitement surrounding the arena and record attendance, the No. 6 UConn Huskies were able to hand Creighton its first Big East loss of the season, defeating the Bluejays 72-61.
Jim Flanery's team, who finished second in the conference standings last season, attempted a comeback effort in the final quarter, leading 23-16, but was unable to overcome the Huskies' lead.
The Bluejays' senior duo, Molly Mogensen and Morgan Maly, combined for 28 points, 16 rebounds and seven assists. However, the production of UConn's Sarah Strong and Paige Bueckers proved too much for the home team.
Bueckers scored 22 points and grabbed five rebounds, while Strong had a double-double with 26 points and 12 boards.
"It's Big East basketball," Paige said about the game (via Fox Sports 97.9 FM). "Just the pressure, not letting them get into their offense, not letting them get comfortable at all. And it definitely starts with our defense and setting us on that way. So we're kind of prepared for it."
Creighton went into the game with a 16-3 overall record and an undefeated 8-0 in the Big East, while Geno Auriemma's squad came in with a 9-0 record in conference play and 18-2 overall.
