Dan Hurley has been one of the most successful coaches in recent times with back-to-back championships and is sought after in the NCAA and even the NBA. In an interview with Jim Tressel's "It's All About the Team" on Wednesday, Hurley spotlighted the people behind the success of a coach: their wife.
As the son of high school basketball coaching legend, Bob Hurley, he was aware of the important role his mother, Christine Hurley, played in their lives.
"You know, the perfect buffer because things get intense," coach Hurley said about his mother (From 04:12). "You know perspective gets lost at times. You're so dialed into victory and into your craft and to being successful that you need a civilian in there somewhere that just has unconditional love for you.
"Being a coach's wife is not an easy task, being the mother of a high achieving person that's striving and pushing is, it's a critical role just for that perspective and just for a normal relationship is, you know, critical because we're so dialed in."
Not just Dan Hurley, but even people outside the family, like Milwaukee Bucks' former assistant coach and current Colorado Mesa Mavericks coach, Mike Dunlap, tweeted about Hurley's mother's sacrifice.
"Dan Hurley. Father. Brother. Basketball royalty. Fine. Unseen & basically voiceless in public, but oh so vital to all success-mother," Dunlap tweeted.
"Christine Hurley. Mothers so important yet mostly go unrecognized. Here is a toast to all the mothers & wives of coaches, unsung heroes🏆."
Dan Hurley's wife, Andrea, explains her role in his coaching career
Dan Hurley has often credited his wife, Andrea, for playing an important role in his success. He once shared in an interview with FOX Sports that most of the decisions in his coaching career were centered around his wife and kids.
Andrea Hurley explained in an interview that despite not being a fan of the sport, she helps her husband at all times.
“When you figure out how you could help your other half get better at what he does, and you see it come back to you,” she told WTNH. “It’s a friendship. It’s working together as a team. I try to make his life easier in any way that I possibly can.
“Every single team that you have, every kid that comes into your life,” she said. “I always say it just snags a little piece of my heart. His heart. I love these kids and the coaches and the coaches’ families so much that I don’t want this to end. Like you’re not going to get this time back.”
Dan Hurley and his team are set to start their regular season next week as they attempt their shot at a three-peat.
