Raven Johnson continues to make her mark after a slow start
Raven Johnson had a sad start to her college career as she was sidelined after two games in her freshman season with a knee injury. She returned in 2022-23 and slowly made her mark, averaging 4.2 points, 2.6 rebounds and 3.4 assists.
Johnson played an important role in South Carolina's undefeated championship run last season as she averaged 8.1 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 4.8 apg and 2.1 spg. She was a key piece in the Gamecocks' defense along with Kamilla Cardoso.
The 2024-25 season started shakily for Johnson as she struggled to find her role. South Carolina coach Dawn Staley pointed this out and talked about her not preparing well during the offseason.
"Raven’s come a long way from the beginning of the season," Staley said on Jan. 3, via On3. "When you don’t put in the work you did before, it shows, and that’s what happened early on.
"She’s been getting back in the gym and reconnecting with her game. It’s an easy fix when you put in the effort, and she’s done just that. We’re a much better team now than a month ago, and Raven’s contributions have been a big part of that."
Johnson is eligible for the 2025 WNBA draft and Staley said that was one of the reasons for the guard's slow start.
"Sometimes it happens," Staley said. "I do know that this is a real thing: When we have our WNBA-eligible players, it makes you press, and it gets you out of your norm. Your normal routine of focusing on the game, your focus becomes something else, and then the things that you do well aren't up to par."
Johnson is averaging 5.4 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.6 assists. She will suit up on Sunday when No. 2-ranked South Carolina faces No. 5-ranked Texas.
