Mississippi State men's college basketball head coach Chris Jans has agreed to a contract extension through the 2027-28 season (per Pete Thamel, senior writer for ESPN). This deal also marks the maximum contract length for a state employee in Mississippi.
Jans has been rewarded for taking the Bulldogs to two consecutive NCAA Tournaments and will receive a pay raise that starts at $1 million per year. He will now make $4.2 million in base salary next season. This deal puts Chris Jans in the top half of SEC basketball coaches.
Last season was his eighth as a head coach in Division I basketball, and he has a career record of 185-71. With the Bulldogs, Jans has a 42-27 record. In the 2022-23 season, he had a 21-13 (8-10 SEC) record, and last season, he had a 21-14 (8-10 SEC) record.
The Mississippi State athletic director, Zac Selmon, was thrilled with the announcement and spoke highly of the coach.
"We are excited for the future of Mississippi State basketball under the leadership of Coach Jans," Selmon said in a news release. "He and his staff have done a tremendous job since arriving in Starkville, and we know the best is yet to come.
"Fueled by seven sellouts, Bulldog fans made Humphrey Coliseum one of the most electric atmospheres in college basketball this past season, and we can't wait for what next year has in store. Pack The Hump!"
Chris Jans' Coaching Career
Jans started coaching junior college in 1966 for the Kirkwood Eagles where he won the conference regular-season championship and then the national championship the following year. He also coached the Howard College Hawks and the Chipola Indians where he won the conference regular-season championship again.
His college basketball journey started in the 2014-15 season when he coached the Bowling Green Falcons for one season before heading over to the New Mexico State Aggies in the Western Athletic Conference.
Jans had an overall record of 122-32 for the Aggies where he was the head coach for five seasons from 2017-22. He joined New Mississippi State in the 2022-23 season, taking them to the NCAA Tournament twice.
