Kim Mulkey is regarded as one of the greatest coaches in women's college basketball history, but she is also known for her controversial outfit choices, which often draw attention, even from her players. Flau'jae Johnson, a star player for the LSU Tigers and a rapper with a NIL valuation of $1.5 million, discussed her coach's distinctive style on her podcast.
In episode 26 of Johnson's "Best of Both Worlds" podcast released on Friday, she highlighted Mulkey’s standout attire for the "Dress Like Kim Mulkey" contest during the Tigers' home game against Auburn on Jan. 5. She sported her now-famous "hoop sweater."
"Coach Mulkey fit? Terrible! No, nah, I’m just playing," Johnson said. "I actually liked it. I think it looked better in person. You got to see what she was going for, you know what I’m saying?
"Y’all not going to play my coach on the internet like that. She get on my nerves half the time, but y’all not going to play her like that. I get the drip. I think it look better from the front. Y’all dragging it," she added.
Mulkey patrolled the sidelines in a black sweater adorned with a basketball and backboard design with a rim around her midsection and strands of netting hanging down, making it appear as though she was inside a basketball hoop. She completed the look with bright red pants and shoes.
In a post-game press conference, Mulkey shared that the outfit was designed by Louisiana native Jaime Glas Odom, also known as the "Queen of Sparkles."
The vibrant outfit reflected the Tigers’ spirited performance, as the No. 6 team defeated Auburn 73-63, extending their winning streak to 17 games.
Fans embrace "Dress Like Kim Mulkey" theme at Auburn Game
Fans attending the 2025 SEC home opener against Auburn last Sunday were encouraged to channel their inner Coach Kim Mulkey through their attire.
At halftime, a lively group of fans took to the court dressed in extravagant outfits, blonde wigs, and glitter—many nailing uncanny likenesses of Mulkey’s signature style, bringing a lighthearted atmosphere to the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.
The highlight of the event came during halftime, when the best-dressed participants were invited onto the court to compete for the top prize.
The winner was a young girl named May, who donned a gold tiger-print suit reminiscent of Mulkey’s bold fashion sense. Her reward was one of the flamboyant jackets the coach had previously worn for a game.
