Shelomi Sanders, the youngest child of NFL Hall of Famer and Colorado football coach Deion Sanders, was quick to appreciate Mikayla Johnson and Pitt women's basketball for a massive feat.
On Jan. 12, the Panthers scripted NCAA history by completing the largest regulation comeback win ever, overturning a 32-point deficit to beat the SMU Mustangs 72-59.
Sanders shared a story on Instagram earlier on Monday to hype up her former teammate, summing up her feelings for Johnson's success in just three words.
"Yeaaaaaaa girly pop," wrote Sanders.
The Mustangs ran away to a 46-14 lead with 1:37 to go in the second quarter, and many would say that they would see out a big win on the road with such a large lead.
However, the Panthers had other ideas, preventing the Mustangs from scoring in the third quarter and restricting them to just 10 points in the second half altogether.
Johnson, who was teammates with Sanders at Colorado in the 2023-24 season, played a massive role in Pitt's historic comeback against the Mustangs. She came off the bench to score 22 points and grab six rebounds in her 33-minute performance.
Johnson shot seven-for-15 from the field and three-of-seven three-pointers, complementing Khadija Faye's impressive double-double of 21 points and 12 rebounds to perfection.
In the process, the redshirt sophomore boosted her stats to 9.7 points and 4.4 rebounds, while Pitt improved their overall record to 9-9 as they scored their first victory in conference play.
Shelomi Sanders struggles to make an impression at Alabama A&M
While Johnson has made an impression at Pitt, Shelomi Sanders has had contrasting fortunes after transferring from Colorado to Alabama A&M. While she has appeared in every game for the Bulldogs this season, she has averaged 1.6 points, 0.4 rebounds and 0.3 assists in 4.6 minutes per game.
Despite Sanders' struggles at Alabama A&M, the Bulldogs have made a decent start to the 2024-25 season, tallying a 10-6 overall record and 3-1 record in conference play so far.
The Bulldogs currently rank third in the Southwestern Athletic Conference regular season standings, and will be keen to keep the momentum going. They will face the Alabama State Hornets in their next game, which will take place on January 18 at 3:00 PM ET.
