Shelomi Sanders, the youngest daughter of Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, began 2025 with a resolution to care for her health. The guard has faced many challenges after being diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 13.

On Monday, Sanders shared a glimpse into her journey via an Instagram reel. She highlighted the tools she relies on to manage her diabetes. Shelomi praised the Dexcom G7 and Omnipod 5 insulin delivery systems for their role in simplifying her life as a student-athlete. In her post, Shelomi wrote:

"Balancing life as a college student and basketball player isn’t easy, but managing my diabetes should be. That’s why I love pairing my Dexcom G7 and Omnipod 5! 🌟
"This integration provides the freedom of automated insulin delivery with the latest CGM technology and is the only waterproof and fully wearable AID system."

In the video, Shelomi shared that she has taken proactive steps in managing her Type 1 diabetes, which has drastically improved her quality of life. With the use of a real-time glucose monitor, she can now effortlessly track her glucose levels. It has also helped her avoid the need for injections or tubes, even during her intense training sessions on the court.

She also shared how the monitor gives her an accurate reading just 30 minutes after use, offering her peace of mind. Not just that, but also the freedom to focus on her athletic performance without distractions.

Shelomi Sanders transferred to Alabama A&M University in 2024 after spending time at the University of Colorado. Her decision came after a challenging season with the Buffaloes, where injuries and limited opportunities hindered her ability to shine.

She averaged 1.6 points per game but played only 11 minutes across five games due to a broken thumb.

Shelomi Sanders went from insecurity to advocacy

Reflecting on her experiences with diabetes, Shelomi Sanders opened up about her diagnosis and the emotional hurdles she faced. She recalled the symptoms that led to her diagnosis, such as rapid weight loss, excessive thirst, and fatigue. She said:

"I was dropping a whole bunch of weight, and I just knew there was something off. Being that young and getting diagnosed, it was pretty tough just because I didn’t expect to take on that much responsibility at a young age. I was just very insecure."

Over time, Shelomi’s perspective shifted as she learned to embrace her condition. A turning point came when she posted a video explaining her devices and her journey with diabetes. The overwhelming support she received encouraged her to continue advocating for awareness. In an interview after a game, Shelomi explained:

“I was really in denial and very insecure about it for so long. So one day I just made a video explaining my devices and what I’ve been through, and I’ve gotten so much love since then.”

Shelomi Sanders credits her family and support system for helping her manage her health effectively. She uses advanced tools like the Dexcom G7 continuous glucose monitoring system, which links to an app and provides real-time updates. This technology enables her parents and coaching staff to monitor her glucose levels.
