Flau'jae Johnson chose LSU for rap and basketball career
LSU Tigers star Flau'jae Johnson has become renowned for balancing both her rap and basketball careers to the very highest levels, but when she was being recruited, that aspect was a contentious one.
During an interview with USA Today, Johnson revealed that she chose to join LSU because the program allowed her to pursue both her rap and basketball career.
"When I was getting recruited, a lot of teams kept asking me, ‘Which one do you wanna do?’ And I’d be like, ‘I wanna do both,’" Johnson said. "And they wouldn’t understand me so I was like, 'I’ll just do music (and quit basketball).'
"I was already making money, already buzzing. But then I found a place (LSU) that really understood my vision and just allowed me to be myself while playing the sport I love."
Since then, she has managed to snag a collaboration with renowned musicians like Wyclef Jean and Lil Wayne, while getting a lucrative deal with Jay Z's Roc Nation label.
Her career has reached new heights as Johnson will perform at the star-studded 2024 Cannes Lions Festival in Paris on June 17 alongside stars like Jason and Travis Kelce and Draymond Green.
Flau'jae Johnson revealed that she would not pursue both careers for a long time and that she has a retirement scenario in mind.
"Oh, I am not going to be in my 30s still playing in the league," Johnson said. "No, I’ve been playing since I was 3. I’m gonna get a couple of years in the league (WNBA), hopefully, buy a team and then go sit on an island in Cancun."
Flau'jae Johnson is already breaking glass ceilings as both the face of college basketball and as an upcoming rap career at the very top of the game.
