All eyes were fixated on the court as Paige Bueckers' UConn faced Hannah Hidalgo's Notre Dame in the Shamrock Classic, a rivalry between two programs that goes back decades. During the game, there were several contentious moments of officiating. However, one of those moments seemingly left UConn fans triggered over the poor officiating on Bueckers.
With a little over two minutes left in the third quarter, Liatu King of Notre Dame battled Paige for an offensive rebound after a missed layup. She reached from behind Bueckers and landed on top of her leading to both players falling to the floor. While analysts expected the foul to be called on King, the officials called a foul on UConn, and play resumed with Notre Dame keeping possession.
Fans took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to express their discontent about the officiating. A lot of fans were even shocked to hear what the live commentators had to say. ESPN commentator Rebecca Lobo also seemingly earned their ire after suggesting it was "probably" a foul.
"I am sick"
"My god, that is insane, that's a f***ed up no call"
"like 1) its a joke they didnt call that 2) they could have literally injured any of our players and not even called the fvcking fouls im just speechless and p!ssed for paige"
"Rebecca please shut up that was clearly one of the worst fouls of the game, nearly killed Paige"
"Probably fouls Paige Bueckers” yeah well history tells me they likely called a foul on her instead. The way this girl is treated by “refs” needs to be studied. @NCAA"
"“probably fouls paige bueckers…?” is the most stupid thing to say when it was clearly a foul"
“probably fouls Paige Bueckers” Rebecca don’t pmo
"like this is actually insane
This was moments before UConn went on a run to cut Notre Dame's lead to one point, only to get that run iced by a Hannah Hidalgo buzzer-beater. Nonetheless, officiating was a key concern for UConn fans throughout the game.
What happened when Paige Bueckers eventually got a foul call
Near the end of the fourth quarter, Bueckers went to the free throw line when the game was basically decided, with Notre Dame leading by 12 points. The Notre Dame crowd started chanting "overrated" for Paige as she went 1 of 2 from the line.
She ended the game with 25 points on a rough shooting night - 11 of 20 from the field, 0 of 4 from the 3-point line, and only three free throws made. UConn's undefeated streak also came to an end with this loss.
