Cooper Flagg, Duke's 2024 No. 1 recruit, is yet to make his debut in the NCAA. However, he has drummed heavy attention from fans and analysts eager to see him play with the Blue Devils.
Duke coach Jon Scheyer joined College Hoops Today with Jon Rothstein” this week for an interview on the upcoming season. He spoke about Cooper Flagg and his prospects within the team and added that he was expecting an immediate impact from the five-star recruit like many iconic freshmen before him.
“We would absolutely have that expectation with Cooper,” Scheyer said (per On3). “And the thing is, that’s what we do on a yearly basis. I’m used to playing freshmen. It’s the world I live in. Cooper belongs at Duke because he’s not afraid of the spotlight and the expectations, but he also doesn’t play to them.”
“He’s really gonna make history. I mean to be 17 years old for the first half of the season. ... There’ll be moments where he has to adjust and gets knocked back. But that’s what this whole thing is for, and he’s wired for it. He’s made to play [at Duke], but he’s also made to play on the biggest stage, and he’s going to be terrific for us.”
The Blue Devils had an Elite Eight run last season and have since undergone a roster re-haul with Cooper Flagg at the center. This makes them one of the frontrunners for the championship bid in the 2024-25 season.
Cooper Flagg reveals why he chose Duke over other major programs
Given his exceptional talent, Cooper Flagg was one of the heavily recruited prospects with offers from most major programs in his bag. However, the forward took his time in making his final decision and picked Duke over programs like UConn, Kansas, Texas and Villanova.
Flagg joined Caleb Foster on "The Brotherhood" podcast in July where he explained his reasons for choosing the Blue Devils.
"Just kind’ve had that feeling of being on campus, really just imagining myself being here, walking the same places that you guys were walking to practice and the halls," Flagg said. "Once I kind’ve felt that, I kind’ve had the feeling like, this is where I wanted to be. And that’s kind’ve what helped to propel my decision."
