While Mark Few's Gonzaga Bulldogs have long been a dominant force in college basketball, particularly in the West Coast Conference, the team has experienced a downturn in recent years. For the first time in over a decade, the Bulldogs failed to win a conference title.
This season has brought more struggles, with the team already dropping two conference games. Gonzaga, who started the WCC slate with a 5-0 record, suffered back-to-back losses against Oregon State and Santa Clara — their first consecutive conference losses since February 2014.
Following a 99-103 loss to Santa Clara on Saturday, questions were raised about coach Few's future with the program, where he has been at the helm since 1999.
Analyst Jeff Goodman weighed in on the state of Gonzaga and Few's career on the "Field of 68 After Dark" podcast on Monday.
"I think the bigger storyline, honestly — is this it for Mark Few? Could this be his final year before he hands it over to Brian Michaelson, their assistant?" Goodman said (3:10 onwards).
"It really could be ... I'm going to call my shot on Mark Few here and say I really do think there's a good chance that this is it for him. That he doesn't really want to do this in this climate anymore, and he looks at it and says, 'I'm not sure with the roster that I have that I think I can compete for Final Fours anymore.'"
"But I don't think while he's driven by it, I don't think it's like sleepless nights for Mark Few to have to win a national title before he calls it a career. So again, I could see it happening after this year."
Mark Few addresses concerns surrounding Gonzaga's recent struggles
Speaking on the state of his team following the loss to Santa Clara, coach Mark Few was vocal about the program's struggles.
"That's a shame that we had them playing really good basketball there early, and we just didn't finish off a couple of games," he said postgame. "Santa Clara is a nice team. Got big wings, and that continues to bother us, big wings."
This is their worst run since the 2010-11 season, with six losses in the first 20 games. The Bulldogs, who missed out on winning the regular season title last season, are now in jeopardy of doing the same again.
With a 5-2 record in the WCC, Gonzaga sits behind defending champion Saint Mary's (6-0) and San Francisco (6-2) in the standings.
