Despite losing top players like Caitlin Clark, Gabbie Marshall and Kate Martin in the offseason, Iowa has restructured its offense around its seasoned players, particularly guard Kylie Feuerbach. In her fourth year, Feuerbach was in the team’s season opener against Northern Illinois on Wednesday, playing 33 minutes and scoring 14 points, nine rebounds, five assists and six steals.
Meanwhile, another Hawkeye, Jada Gyamfi, saw limited action against the Huskies, playing six minutes and scoring two points. In addition to their on-court performance, Feuerbach and Gyamfi also caught fans' attention with their Halloween look.
On Thursday, Gyamfi posted belated Halloween photos on Instagram, featuring herself with a Magic 8 ball alongside Feuerbach.
“Happy (super duper late) Halloween,” the post's caption read.
The post garnered a lot of fan comments, including a supportive one from Gabbie Marshall, who wrote:
"Cutie girls."
Gabbie Marshall is no longer a part of Iowa
Gabbie Marshall has officially stepped away from college basketball after the redshirt senior concluded a remarkable career with the Hawkeyes. A key defensive anchor in Iowa’s formidable backcourt trio alongside Caitlin Clark and Kate Martin, Marshall made her mark by finishing sixth on the program’s all-time steals list with 235.
Marshall apparently decided against pursuing a professional basketball career like her former teammates—who declared for the WNBA draft. With her bachelor’s degree in health and human physiology now complete, she is shifting focus to her graduate studies in occupational therapy at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
In her farewell message on Instagram, Gabbie Marshall wrote:
"Thank you Iowa and Hawkeye Nation for being my home away from home, for showing me so much love and support & for giving me the best ending to the sport that has shaped my life."
Meanwhile, Kylie Feuerbach, from Sycamore, Illinois, started her collegiate basketball journey with Iowa State in the 2020-21 season. That's where she started in 24 of 28 games before transferring to Iowa in 2021-22.
After appearing in all 32 games her first year, a torn ACL sidelined her for the 2022-23 season. She returned last season as a bench player, hitting a season-high 13 points against Minnesota.
Reflecting on her journey, Feuerbach credited her teammates and coaches, saying:
“I come in with the same mentality as I always do, just working as hard as I can. Whatever the outcome is, I’ll always be satisfied as long as I’m working hard.”
WNBA star Caitlin Clark recently joined her former teammate Jada Gyamfi on her podcast, where Gyamfi opened up about missing her former teammates.
“I miss (your) voice, like I miss like hearing (you),” Gyamfi said.
Clark asked her to elaborate, and Gyamfi explained:
“I get just like your intensity, like all that stuff, like it makes practice like more fun 'cause like, I feel like we need more of a competitive edge 'cause we’re all so nice.”
Over her past two seasons, Gyamfi has had limited playing time, coming off the bench in all her appearances. As a freshman, she played in only eight games, averaging 3.4 minutes per outing. Her sophomore year saw her minutes increase slightly across 20 games, averaging about 4.0 minutes per game.
In total, she has scored 33 points while wearing Iowa’s black and gold. The season opener against Northern Illinois also marked a new chapter for the team under the guidance of new coach Jan Jensen.
