JuJu Watkins took the college basketball world by storm in her freshman season with the USC Trojans. In the sixth episode of NBC Sports' documentary series "On the Rise: JuJu Watkins," she relived that historic campaign, culminating in the Trojans reaching the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year.
On Monday, Uninterrupted's Instagram page posted a short clip of that episode featuring Watkins and the Trojans during Selection Sunday. One USC staff member gave Watkins a custom-made necklace to celebrate the occasion. She smiled from ear to ear as she received the surprise gift, hugging her colleague for his warm gesture.
"Man, thank you, B! Damn, I ain't get you nothing. I gotta get you a gift," Watkins said upon receiving the surprise present.
Watkins had more reasons to be happy during that party. The USC Trojans also secured the No. 1 seed for the first time in the NCAA Tournament since 1986. After compiling a 26-5 record and winning the Pac-12 Women's Tournament, they earned the right to host a March Madness game at Galen Center.
The Trojans reached the Elite Eight after beating Texas A&M Corpus Christi, Kansas and Baylor in the first three rounds. Geno Auriemma and the UConn Huskies ended Watkins' magical run, defeating the Trojans 80-73 at Moda Center on Apr. 1 to book their place in the Final Four.
JuJu Watkins' USC Trojans gain sweet revenge on UConn Huskies
The USC Trojans and the UConn Huskies squared off on Saturday for the first time since April's Elite Eight clash and their showdown lived up to the hype. The Trojans survived a furious second-half comeback from the Huskies, pulling off a thrilling 72-70 victory at the XL Center.
The Huskies unleashed a 32-13 run bridging the third and fourth quarters to take their first lead with 4:34 left. JuJu Watkins stepped up for the Trojans when they needed her the most, though, scoring six of USC's last eight points to stop Paige Bueckers and UConn's late charge.
Watkins finished the game with 25 points on 9 of 16 shooting. She also had six rebounds, five assists and three blocks for the Trojans, who moved up to No. 4 in the Associated Press rankings following the win.
