Rutgers Scarlet Knights transfer Cam Spencer was one of the Huskies' most important players as they romped to an impressive national championship win under coach Dan Hurley.
After three years with Loyola and a single season with Rutgers, Spencer was an unacclaimed pickup by Huskies coach Dan Hurley, who got along famously with the shooting guard before he declared for the 2024 NBA Draft.
During an appearance on the "Ryen Rusillo Show," Hurley made the case for Spencer as a draft pick and NBA player, highlighting the guard's shooting ability.
"Yeah, I think, you know, from that, that's 30 to 40 that (Spencer's predicted draft range), you know, that 30 to 45 range where, you know, where there's guaranteed contracts, you know, to the players, you know, in that range. I think there's several teams that really value the level that he shoots the ball at. I mean, he was a hair away from that exclusive 50-45 90 Club, which not a lot of guys hit at the college level," Hurley said.
The much-coveted Hurley also highlighted Cam Spencer's speed and how certain aspects of his game would translate to the NBA.
"You know, he obviously it looks slow, and it probably is slow. Yes, it is. It's slow looking. And then like when you see it, it's slow in terms of where he moves, but he gets to all his spots against, you know, whether that was Devin Carter, this year in the Big East who's going to be a high draft picks or other players that he destroyed in a mountain conference or the NCAA tournament. So, you know, the shooting, you could see for yourself, the competitiveness, the fire, what he brings to an organization that way, I think, you know, is a real plus for him."
Cam Spencer one of the 2024 class' best shooters
Cam Spencer is lethal from beyond the arc, and he had the fifth-best shot-making from deep in the country last season, with his ability making spacing for the UConn Huskies much easier.
Spencer averaged 14.3 points on 48.4% shooting from the field and 44% from beyond the arc, 4.9 rebounds and 3.6 assists last season en route to leading the UConn Huskies to a dominant second consecutive national championship win.
Accurate shooting from deep is the bread and butter of the modern NBA, and Cam Spencer is one of the best shooters in the 2024 NBA Draft class. He is projected by ESPN to be a mid-to-late second-round pick in the draft.
