Dan Hurley perfectly captured the essence of UConn athletics after the Huskies defeated North Carolina (27-14) in the Wasabi Fenway Bowl on Saturday. It is the football program's first bowl since 2010 and UNC's fifth straight loss in a bowl game. The win solidifies the University of Connecticut's attention towards other sports than men's and women's basketball.
Hurley congratulated the UConn football program and its coach, Jim Mora, on X (formerly Twitter) and also asserted that the Huskies' dominance spreads through multiple sports.
"Congrats @CoachJimMoraFB @UConnFootball! UConn is an Everything School!" Dan Hurley wrote.
The Huskies took control early, garnering 361 offensive yards while holding UNC to just 45 first-half yards. Their strategic execution posted a huge 24-7 gap at the half.
While UConn dominated equally on the defense, the Tar Heels’ lack of cohesion and notable players paved the way for their struggles. With All-American Omarion Hampton sitting out to prepare for the NFL Draft, starting QB Jacolby Criswell suffered a shoulder injury early in the contest.
It is UConn's first win against a power 4 opponent, losing to Duke, Maryland, Syracuse and Wake Forest.
"We came close in three of our four Power 4 games, lost three of them by a touchdown. We got over that hump," Jim Mora said after the game.
Dan Hurley is a long-time supporter of UConn Huskies football
Andy Katz's list of the best fanbases in college basketball named the UConn Huskies supporters the second best in the nation this summer. There is no doubt Dan Hurley realizes it as he urged the basketball fans to storm the football field and support the football wing near the beginning of the football season.
Hurley highlighted the University of Connecticut's broader goals in the world of athletics, claiming that having a large fan base can help the sport grow nationally.
"For the profile of the university and what we're trying to do in sports here in general, I think it's critically important that we have a huge crowd this weekend, and that the country can see UConn football can be a big deal and there's a fan base and a desire for it in the state," Dan Hurley said in an IG post by UConn.
UNC now ends its season behind a 6-7 record while the Huskies experience their third-ever 9-win season in the last 128 years.
