Dan Hurley's UConn Huskies recorded their eighth straight victory since the Maui mishap on Sunday with the 87-84 win over the Providence Friars. This was not an easy win for Hurley and his team, as the Friars were leading the scoring for most of the game.
The second half began with UConn trailing 39-27 before it took over in the final eight minutes, starting with the 60-60 tie. Hassan Diarra led the Huskies with 19 points, eight assists and three steals. He went 4-of-8 from the floor and 10-of-11 from the free-throw line.
Dan Hurley's wife, Andrea, showed her appreciation for the 6-foot-2 guard by resharing his stats post from the Huskies to her Instagram story on Monday.
"Love this kid! 🐺💙," she wrote with the post.
Andrea Hurley is known for being involved in her husband's coaching career. In November, college insider John Fanta revealed how Andrea motivates the Huskies players to perform well during shootaround.
"Andrea prepares special treats for UConn at the end of every shootaround," Fanta said. "After the Huskies make a half-court shot, they get a special treat and a message from the First Lady of Connecticut basketball."
All the treats included messages from Andrea and were signed "Mama Hurley XO."
Hassan Diarra earns big praise from Dan Hurley
Hassan Diarra is a fifth-year senior who transferred to UConn for his junior season from Texas A&M. He is averaging 8.9 points, 2.8 rebounds and 6.5 assists and is the most efficient from mid-range shooting at 43.2%.
Commenting on his crucial role in Sunday's win, Dan Hurley said:
“The game for us obviously was about Hassan Diarra, and his will to not allow us to lose what would have been a really rough game. He carried himself with the spirit and will of a two-time national champion.” Whatever you ask Hass to do, he goes and does it.
"I got so much respect for how hard he plays and all the different ways he helps a team in terms of the energy, the competitive fire, the do-whatever-it-takes to win a game (mentality), the being as selfless as he is. I’m very grateful to coach him because he’s a winner. He’s a champion.”
Up next, the Huskies travel to Villanova for their game against the Wildcats on Wednesday. With the 12-3 overall record, Dan Hurley will hope that his team can continue the successful run.
