Dan Hurley was all over the news in early June after he was offered the head coach position by the Los Angeles Lakers. With two consecutive national championships, Hurley was one of the most sought-after names this summer as teams underwent coaching changes.
Despite the opportunity to move to the NBA, which Hurley has said was his ultimate dream, the 2024 Naismith Coach of the Year decided to extend his stay at Storrs.
During an interview with 'Good Morning America' on Wednesday, Dan Hurley's wife, Andrea, revealed the decision to stay was made through a text group chat.
"All day long we kept going back and forth," she said. "So that night, many tears later, we said, 'Okay, count of three, let's say stay or leave (on the group chat). Thank goodness we all said stay." (01:33)
Coach Hurley also shared his thoughts on the decision, saying:
“It wasn’t anything negative about the opportunity to coach in the NBA. It’s just how much you love where you are and the people that you get to do it with.”
The Los Angeles Lakers offered Dan Hurley a $70 million, six-year deal. After rejecting this offer, he signed a $50 million contract extension with the Huskies that will see him stay at UConn until 2030.
“I am humbled by this entire experience,” Hurley said in June. “At the end of the day, I am extremely proud of the championship culture we have built at Connecticut.
"We met as a team before today’s workout and our focus right now is getting better this summer and connecting as a team as we continue to pursue championships.”
Dan Hurley and the UConn Huskies are preparing for a three-peat
In the history of the NCAA, there is just one team that won the national championship more than two times in a row. From 1967 to 1973, the James Wooden-led UCLA Bruins were champions for five consecutive years.
In the upcoming season, Dan Hurley and UConn are hoping to create history as the first team since the Bruins to go for a three-peat.
"It's the elephant in the room," Hurley said (via Fox News Sports). "You can't hide from this opportunity. If we don't win three in a row, what are people going to say? That you suck as a coach because you could only win two in a row?
"But we realize the magnitude of this. You have to be a champion at UConn to be remembered and celebrated."
The UConn Huskies will begin their 2024-25 season on Nov. 6 against Sacred Heart.
