UConn's men's basketball program enjoyed one of its strongest years in its history. Ahead of the New Year, the Huskies took to Instagram to quiz its fans on what they felt were their favorite moments from 2024, which drew varied responses from the masses.
Huskies head coach Dan Hurley's name popped up a few times in the comments section of the post. One fan lauded Hurley's decision to reject a blockbuster six-year, $70 million offer from the Los Angeles Lakers during the offseason to stay at Storrs, subsequently putting pen to paper on a six-year, $50 million extension instead.
"Hurley turning down the lakers like a real man," said one fan.
Another fan brought up a bizarre moment from the Huskies' 75-60 victory over the Purdue Boilermakers in the national championship game when Hurley pushed Cam Spencer during a play, which was deemed a turnover.
"Hurley pushing Cam on the court during the national championship game and then getting called for it and Hurley asking Cam if he did touch him and Cam just shrugging his shoulders," one fan wrote.
Iconic 30-0 run against Illinois emerges as top favorite among UConn men's basketball fans
UConn men's basketball left the nation awestruck during their Elite Eight game against Illinois in this year's March Madness. With under two minutes to go in the first half, the scores were tied at 23-23, which gave the Fighting Illini some hope.
However, the Huskies embarked on a staggering 30-0 run that would leave Illinois in the dust. While it helped them make the Final Four, the run convinced Huskies fans that they would retain the national championship this year, which they made clear in the comments of the team's post today.
"30-0 run was by far the most entertaining moment," said one fan.
"30-0 run convinced me we would win it all," added another.
One fan wrote, "Literally laughing at how dominant Clingan looked on defense during the 30-0 run. It was the perfect encapsulation of what he had done all year, scare opposing players away from scoring opportunities."
This season, the Huskies are looking to become the first team to complete a rare three-peat of national championships since the all-conquering 1967-1973 UCLA Bruins. They have made a strong start to the season, winning 10 of their 13 games so far and currently rank No. 11 in the AP Top 25.
