Philadelphia native Dawn Staley showed her allegiance to the Eagles by poking fun at the team's longtime rival, Dallas Cowboys. On Sunday, the South Carolina coach shared a meme on X that showed the Cowboys losing 21-17 against the NFL Bye Week.
"Someone just sent me this…..I just couldn’t keep this gem to myself. 🤣🤣🤣," Staley wrote with the meme.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, Dawn Staley is a long-time supporter of the city's sports teams, including the Eagles, 76ers and Phillies. Earlier this year, the coach was featured in a prank call by the Cowboys when the team's schedule was announced.
As part of the prank, the Cowboys called some of their opponents' fans and coach Staley was one of them. When she picked up the video call, she just said, "yuck."
Dawn Staley shares the team's progress ahead of the 2024-25 season
After winning the championship with an undefeated season run, the South Carolina Gamecocks start the new season as favorites to repeat the title win. South Carolina was ranked No. 1 on the AP Top 25 Women's Basketball preseason poll.
Dawn Staley is also proud of her team as she praised them in an interview with CBS Sports.
"They're locked in, they are competitive. I think it's going well," coach Staley said. "We've taken a lot of losses to the Highlighters the first couple of weeks of practice, but I think now they've stepped it up and they've accepted the challenge. Sometimes they let them know about it. It's cool, we are really a tight-knit family."
The Gamecocks have one noticeable loss as center Kamilla Cardososa left for the WNBA. The loss is expected to impact the Gamecocks in some way but Dawn Staley is confident in other players' ability to step up to the task.
"Obviously, she was big in stature. She was big in personality. She was big in leadership," Staley said of Cardoso. "When you lose someone like that, you hope she left the legacy of leadership, which she has."
"Our program is next woman up. It may not be a single voice, but it's a collection of voices that works for us. It works for us, which is cool because you lose one person and you don't want your program to just go downhill."
The South Carolina Gamecocks will begin their season against Michigan on Nov. 4.
