South Carolina coach Dawn Staley is a diehard Philadelphia Eagles fan. She has shown her loyalty to the team by wearing throwback jackets of Eagles greats while coaching the Gamecocks or posting messages of support on social media.
The Philadelphia Eagles made it to the NFL postseason by finishing second in the NFC with a 14-3-0 record. They beat the No. 7 Green Bay Packers 22-10 to march to the Divisional Playoffs to face the Los Angeles Rams.
On Sunday, the Eagles outclassed the Matthew Stafford-led Rams 28-22 in a snow-filled night, thanks to Saquon Barkley's 205 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Barkley saved quarterback Jalen Hurts from a sack-ridden day to set up a clash with the Washington Commanders in the NFC Championship.
Unfortunately for Staley, the Divisional Playoff game kicked off at the same time the No. 2-ranked South Carolina played No. 13 Oklahoma. The Philadelphia native performed her duties with flying colors, though, guiding the Gamecocks to a 101-60 victory over the Sooners.
She might have had time to watch the closing minutes of the Philadelphia Eagles-LA Rams clash. Staley was in a celebratory mood as she chalked up two wins for herself, tweeting:
"YEEEEEEESSSSSS SIR!!!! Let’s goooo @Eagles !!"
The kickoff for the NFC Championship between the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders is scheduled on Jan. 26 at 3 p.m. ET at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Fortunately, Dawn Staley, a three-time national champion coach, will have a chance to watch the game live, as South Carolina's next game is a day later against Tennessee at 7 p.m. ET.
Dawn Staley vows to stay in South Carolina, says she has no passion to go to the next level
Dawn Staley signed a contract extension with South Carolina that will last until the 2029-30 season. The deal, which starts at a base salary of $4,000,000 and will go up $250,000 each year, made her the highest-paid women's college basketball coach.
Reports say that Staley's restructured deal includes a clause requiring her to pay a departure fee equal to the amount remaining on her contract if she leaves the university before her contract expires. However, a clause in the agreement says that it doesn't include possible coaching or assistant coaching gigs with the NBA or WNBA.
When asked to elaborate on her new contract terms, Dawn Staley said that it's just a part of the deal and that she has no plans of going to the pro leagues.
"It's a give-and-take. It was important for me to have a guaranteed contract. But in having a guaranteed contract, you've got to give them something," Staley said (14:45).
"I would never leave here to go take another college job. I have the best of the best here. And I don't have a passion for the next level. I would have been gone, seriously," she added (15:00)
Dawn Staley seeks to extend her dominance over Kim Mulkey, with South Carolina seeking to extend her winning streak against the LSU coach in an SEC matchup on Thursday at Colonial Life Arena.
Staley is 4-0 against Mulkey after she was hired as the LSU coach in 2022. That includes South Carolina's two-game sweep of LSU in the regular season and SEC Tournament final last season.
