Young Caitlin Clark was once demanded to be removed from the team by an opponent player's mother

Before Caitlin Clark began playing for the AAU, there wasn't a suitable girl's basketball league in her hometown Des Moines, Iowa. So, her father, Brent Clark, signed her up for the boys' team at SportsPlex West in Waukee.

Her competitive streak and hunger to score points, while great for her team, was not well received by some parents. An employee of SportsPlex West, Evan Romanchuk, recalled an incident where Caitlin Clark was particularly having her best night scoring buckets against a team of struggling boys. One of the mothers ran up to the front desk to complain and demand that Caitlin Clark be removed from the court and not allowed to play with the boys.

“She started screaming at us and said it was demoralizing to her son and the other players on the other team,” Romanchuk said. “Our argument was, we were going to allow her to play because, you know, she’s good enough to play at that level.”

For the boys on her team, however, it was a different story. Adam Brauch, a former teammate of Clark, said to the Wall Street Journal:

“I really remember my role on the team was just to get a rebound and try to find Caitlin. There was just a consensus among the guys that the best way we were going to put up any points was just to get her the ball."
"She was just so much better than all of us that she’d get into that mode where she’s like, ‘I can just score every point, so I’m going to do that,’” said another former teammate Sterling Short, who is now a senior at Grand Canyon University.

Her competitive streak helped her lead the Iowa Hawkeyes to two consecutive NCAA final games. Now, she continues her exploits with the Indiana Fever in her rookie season.
