Shelomi Sanders, the youngest daughter of NFL legend and Colorado head coach Deion Sanders, expressed her support for Pittsburgh Panthers standout Mikayla Johnson. Johnson delivered a highlight-worthy performance, especially during Pitt's victory against Utah Tech on Dec. 4.

Mikayla Johnson emerged as one of the game’s standout players. A reel shared by Pitt Women’s Basketball on Instagram showcased Johnson’s on-court prowess. The video, set to Tory Lanez’s song "Stupid Again," highlighted Johnson’s skillful moves and garnered significant praise from fans. They captioned it:

“Just getting started”

Shelomi Sanders quickly re-posted it on her Instagram story, reacting with a star eyes emoji.

The Pittsburgh Panthers women’s basketball team wrapped up their non-conference schedule with a solid 61-52 win over Utah Tech. The game, held at Burns Arena, brought Pitt’s record to 8-6, matching their total wins from last season in just 14 games. This victory came after a challenging four-game losing streak during the Paradise Jam tournament.

Mikayla Johnson leads Pitt to a promising start

Johnson appeared in 15 games and scored a total of 29 points. She posted a season-high six points in a game against Le Moyne earlier in the season. Off the court, her academic achievements led her to the 2024 Pac-12 Winter Academic Honor Roll.

Pitt’s victory over Utah Tech came after a rough patch, including losses to Kansas, Auburn and Northern Iowa at the Paradise Jam, as well as a lopsided defeat to rival West Virginia in the Backyard Brawl.

Despite these setbacks, the Panthers showed grit, with Johnson leading the charge early in the game, scoring five points with a three-pointer and a layup. The team tied the game at 38-38 after halftime thanks to an 11-3 scoring run, with contributions from other key players like Faye and MaKayla Elmore.

Mikayla Johnson graduated high school early to join Colorado for the 2023-24 season. She then transferred to Pittsburgh, where she has become an essential team member. Her high school achievements include being named the 2022 Cook Inlet Conference Player of the Year and recording impressive stats in her junior year, with averages of 17.1 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game.
