Popular ESPN commentator Dick Vitale has been calling college basketball games for the network since the 1979-1980 season, and has become as renowned as the many iconic moments that he has been a part of.

Off the court, Vitale has battled cancer four times, with the latest being a cancerous lymph node in his neck found two weeks ago. He announced the news on his X account and detailed that he was recovering from surgery after the diagnosis.

On Monday, Vitale posted an update on X about his latest condition in which he revealed that Dr. Vosler (his physician) will determine the course of his treatment after the results from his tests come in.

"I am heading for examination by Dr Vosler who did my surgery to remove cancerous lymph node in my neck. Hoping he removes drain that has been put in since surgery. On Thursday he will be part of TUMOR BOARD to analyze my latest Pathology report & determine treatment," Vitale tweeted.

Dick Vitale hopes to resume his broadcasting career

Dick Vitale has become one of the most recognizable and respected voices in college basketball due to his 44-year service in the game which has spanned several generations of basketball.

Last Wednesday, Vitale once again provided an update on his vocal cords on Facebook after he underwent surgery, and even provided a scope for when he is expected to return to calling games.

“Today we had a very eventful day starting at 7:30 in the morning with an examination and a scoping of my vocal cords,” Dick Vitale wrote. “I had a 4-hour major surgery on my vocal cords about 6 weeks ago. Today was to see how I am recovering from the surgery after dealing with cancer on my vocal cords plus the 35 radiation treatments.
“In all, the news was very positive and Dr Zeitals said the healing process is much better than he anticipated. He now has granted me permission to resume talking but I must be in control & be careful to not overdo it. His goal is that I should be ready to do games on ESPN at the start of the new season in November 2024.”

College basketball fans will be delighted by the news that the legendary broadcaster could be back in time for the 2024-2025 college basketball season as he has become an integral part of the sport.
