UConn sophomore Ashlynn Shade delivered a career-high 27 points leading the Huskies to a 101-68 blowout win over Iowa State on Tuesday night. Fans were left in awe by her insane numbers in the first quarter alone, scoring 20 points on 7-of-7 field goals including a perfect 6-of-6 from the deep.
Shade came out firing on all cylinders and was the only scorer for Geno Auriemma's UConn for half of the first quarter, accounting for all 14 points the Huskies had at that point until freshman forward Sarah Strong made a free throw.
Fans had plenty to say about Ashlynn Shade's early outburst. Here are some of their reactions on X (formerly Twitter):
"20 points, 18 on threes, IN THE FIRST QUARTER??????? DO MY EYES DECEIVE ME?????" one fan tweeted, who appeared to be legitimately in disbelief.
"This is so intense Ashlyn pleaseee," another wrote.
"THIS IS INSANE GRABE," one user added.
Here are a few more tweets:
"Everything has been falling for Ashlynn. She literally cannot miss," a fan said.
"ASHLYN NO SHADE OH MY GOD," another fan chimed in.
"Ash, break Katie Lou record pls," one fan pleaded.
Katie Lou, a former UConn forward set the NCAA record for most 3-pointers(10) made in a game without a miss back in 2017. After the surreal first quarter performance (6-of-6) many were hoping she could eclipse that record.
However, Ashlynn Shade cooled off in the second half as the other Huskies players started to get involved, finishing the game with 27 points, two rebounds and four assists. Her 3-point shooting line ended up at 7-of-10.
Ashlynn Shade's record breaking night: Personal bests in scoring and 3-point accuracy
Ashlynn Shade's performance against Iowa State at Mohegan Sun Arena was a record-breaking night for her. Not only did she set new personal bests in scoring with 27 points, but she also hit a career-high seven 3-pointers.
Shade has only touched the 20-point mark only a handful of times in her young career, with this being her fifth such instance. Her previous career-high in scoring was 26 points set in the first round of the NCAA Tournament 2023-24 against Jackson State.
As for her 3-point shooting, the 5-foot-10 guard was lights out from deep on Tuesday, surpassing her previous high of five which she had done a couple of times.
Ashlynn Shade and the UConn Huskies will face a home game against No. 7 USC, led by JuJu Watkins next on Saturday.
