Flau’jae Johnson took over the stage at the 2024 ESPY Award Show on Thursday and wowed fans and sports persons who gathered for the night. The rapper, who recently released her debut EP, "The Best of Both Worlds," sang her song "Came Out A Beast." It included references to former LSU athletes, Angel Reese and Joe Burrow.
NBA champion Dwyane Wade reacted to the performance on X. He quote tweeted a video and wrote:
"You bodied this! @Flaujae 🔥🔥🔥"
Before the event, Angel Reese, who now plays for Dwyane Wade's Chicago Sky, also spoke on Johnson's upcoming performance. She said (via On3):
“That’s a dream come true for her, I’m sure. She’s done so many great things. Being able to see her still thrive. We were there last year together. Her being there in the audience, and now being able to perform for so many great people, I know there are gonna be a lot of people watching her.
“I know she doesn’t fumble. Pressure makes diamonds is something she always says. I know she’s gonna do great tonight and I want to wish her good luck.”
Flau’jae Johnson on balancing music and basketball
Flau’jae Johnson's interest in music and rapping comes from her late father, Camoflauge. The well-known rapper was killed just months before his daughter's birth in 2003.
“Knowing my dad was involved in music made me want to pursue it even more,” she said.
Her natural talent shone through as she participated in America's Got Talent and advanced until the quarterfinals. However, at the same time, Flau’jae Johnson was an incredible basketball player. Talking about balancing both careers, she said to The New York Times:
“I’ve been rapping and playing basketball my whole life. Now that they see me on different stages, they always ask, ‘How do you do it?’ But it’s like, I’ve been doing it. Turn up in the summer, play basketball during basketball season and then go on about my day.”
In an interview with the "Ebro in the Morning Podcast," Johnson admitted that it is tough for her to choose between the two careers.
"Honestly, I always say this, and it sounds kinda crazy, but I can't choose because that's what makes me special," Flau’jae Johnson. "I feel like that's what makes my story iconic because I'm able to perform at a high level, doing both things that I do.
Along with the successful release of her album, Flau’jae Johnson is also preparing for the upcoming college season with the LSU Tigers. Having failed to defend their 2023 NCAA title last season, Johnson and the Tigers will be hoping for a better season this year.
