Dylan Harper and the Rutgers Scarlet Knights finally snapped their three-game losing streak on Monday night, beating the UCLA Bruins 75-68 at Jersey Mike's Arena. Harper was one of three players to score in double figures for the Scarlet Knights, who improved their overall record to 9-8.
Harper scored 18 points in 28 minutes of action. He shot 5-for-13 from the field and made 6-of-8 free throw attempts. However, he struggled with his perimeter shooting, going just 2-of-7 from beyond the arc. He finished the contest with four rebounds and four assists.
Harper was also active on the defensive end, recording one steal and one block. The freshman guard has been an important piece for the Scarlet Knights this season, averaging a team-best 20.0 points through 16 games.
Here are Harper's stats from the game against the UCLA Bruins.
Dylan Harper gets offensive help from Ace Bailey in Rutgers' win over UCLA
Dylan Harper bounced back after recording poor performances in his previous two outings. He went scoreless in Rutgers' 75-63 loss to Wisconsin on Jan. 6, going 0-for-2 from the field. He followed that up with another dud against then-No. 20 Purdue on Jan. 9, scoring just six points in the Scarlet Knights' 68-50 loss.
Harper did most of his damage against UCLA in the second half, scoring 12 of his 18 points during that period. He helped the Scarlet Knights erase a 33-30 deficit at the break, with Rutgers outscoring UCLA 45-35 in the second period.
It wasn't just Harper who punished the Bruins' defense. Ace Bailey led the Scarlet Knights in scoring with 20 points. He shot 7-for-13 from the field, including 1-of-4 from the 3-point area. He was automatic from the free-throw line, knocking down all five of his attempts at the charity stripe.
The Rutgers big man also grabbed 10 rebounds to record his fifth double-double of the season. He previously achieved that feat in the games against Merrimack, Texas A&M, Penn State and Princeton.
Jeremiah Williams provided the firepower off the bench for Rutgers, scoring 11 points. He was efficient on the offensive end, making five of his seven field-goal attempts. He also had one rebound, one assist and one steal in 26 minutes of play.
