Hannah Hidalgo and Olivia Miles have been running the show at Notre Dame this season. While the duo have locked down the Fighting Irish's backcourt with some incredible performances, an unsung hero is emerging at South Bend.
That unsung hero is none other than the third member of the team's menacing backcourt: Sonia Citron. The senior guard has silently gone about her role this season, making a difference on both ends of the court across all their games so far.
This season, Citron has averaged an impressive 14.9 points, 6.4 rebounds and 2.5 assists while shooting 44.1% from the field. Ahead of the massive showdown between the Fighting Irish and UConn Huskies, fans flocked to social media to shower their praise on Citron, expressing their opinions on Instagram.
Some of them threw predictions for next year's WNBA draft, firmly believing Citron could be a top pick if she keeps this up for the rest of the season.
"Easily top 5 draft pick," said one fan.
"Soni is an amazing player and one of the Big Three!!! Love how she is so consistent every single game!! I hope LA drafts her!!" another fan said.
"I keep saying she could pull the quiet No.1 pick like Jackie Young. @soniacitron game reminds me a lot of Jackie," one fan added.
Others, including her teammates Natalija Marshall and Dara Mabray, believe she is underrated no longer, speaking volumes of her talent:
"Time to stop calling her underrated yall pissing me off now fr," Dara Mabrey wrote.
"My girl not underrated," Natalija Marshall said.
"Give ya girl her flowers fr she’s been that good the whole time," a fan added.
Sonia Citron plays supporting act to Hannah Hidalgo and Olivia Miles to perfection
Hannah Hidalgo has shown why she earned a spot on AP's Preseason All-America Team, leading from the front for Notre Dame this season. The sophomore guard has averaged 24.6 ppg, 6.8 rpg and 3.3 apg. Miles has also made a strong return from injury, averaging 17.2 ppg, 6.7 rpg and 6.6 apg.
The trio of Hidalgo, Miles and Citron has powered the Fighting Irish to eight wins in their opening 10 games, including impressive victories over three top-five ranked opponents in Texas, USC and, most recently, UConn.
