Sydney Wilson, a former Georgetown college basketball player, was shot three times by a veteran police officer of the Fairfax County Police Department in self-defense on Sept. 16 in Virginia. The black American transwoman from Reston allegedly attacked Officer Peter Liu, who was conducting a welfare check.

The video from bodyworn footage of the officer was released on Monday, which showed Wilson slashing a knife at the officer multiple times despite Liu asking her to stay calm before discharging the firearm.

Georgetown University honored their former basketball player on X, formerly Twitter, writing:

"Georgetown women's basketball mourns the tragic loss of Sydney Wilson (C'13). Forever a Hoya."

X's Community Notes feature, which has been active since 2021, provided context around the incidents. Musk's comments allude to this event potentially being likened to past fatal incidents involving white police officers and black people, similar to George Floyd's death in 2020.

As far as this incident is concerned, the Community Notes said:

"Sydney Wilson attempted to stab a police officer, who then shot her in self-defense."

One user lauded this feature, saying it prevented a possible "Black Lives Matter hoax."

"Community Notes stopping a BLM hoax before it takes off," one user wrote.

Elon Musk, who owns the social media platform and is the current CEO, responded to the post:

"Community Notes is hoax kryptonite."

What happened to Sydney Wilson?

Answering a welfare wellness check, Officer Peter Liu arrived at the 11800 block of Sunrise Valley Drive around 10 am. Bbody camera footage showed Liu knocking on the door of a long, barren hallway.

Wilson opened the door, and the officer said:

“Hi ma’am, I’m Officer Liu.”

Wilson also said "hi" twice before shutting the door. This led to the officer knocking on the door to check on Wilson's health:

“Sydney? Can you please talk to me? I just want to check on you, make sure you’re okay, that’s all,” the footage shows.

After around three minutes, the door opened with Sydney Wilson saying, "How are you?" before slashing a knife at Liu's face, who backtracked in surprise.

The footage showed Liu asking Wilson to “back up” several times; Wilson continuously moved toward him. Liu showed his firearm to Wilson, who took a step back but immediately lunged at the officer, who then discharged his first shot, almost 14 seconds after Wilson opened the door.

Despite being shot, Wilson still appeared to be moving toward the officer with a knife raised high. Liu shot her three more times, and Wilson fell to the ground.

“He did the things that we train him and expect him to do,” Fairfax Police Chief Kevin Davis said at a news conference Monday.
