While discussing South Carolina's upcoming game against Tennessee on Sunday, Dawn Staley gave a prediction for the Philadelphia Eagles NFC Championship game against the Washington Commanders. Staley humorously tied her emotional well-being to the Eagles' performance, saying that a three-touchdown lead at halftime would ease her before heading to the Food City Center in Knoxville.
"We leave at 4:30, so three touchdown lead will make me feel good about that new plane," she said (Timestamp: 6:10).
"That's what my heart says. We Eagles fans, we go by our heart, we go by only heart, we're only emotional about it and we try to protect our heart. So, three touchdown lead will help our hearts."
Dawn Staley's prediction almost came true as the Philadelphia Eagles made history by posting the highest points in a conference title game. They led the Commanders 27-15 at halftime. The 12-point difference fell short of the three-touchdown lead (18 points or 21 with successful kicks).
The margin increased in the second half, as Philadelphia won the contest 55-23 for its second Super Bowl stint in the last three years.
Staley kept up with the game despite South Carolina's flight. She shared a photo displaying the live game on an iPad, cheering for her home team and playfully teasing seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady, who was one of the announcers.
Philadelphia Eagles now has the chance to redeem its Super Bowl LVII loss as they will play the Kansas City Chiefs on Feb. 9.
Dawn Staley highlights South Carolina's approach to Tennessee
The No. 17 Tennessee (15-4, 3-4 Southeastern Conference) represents the end of South Carolina's most competitive and tiring stretch. The Gamecocks (19-1, 7-0 SEC) are coming off winning four consecutive ranked games.
Dawn Staley noted the Lady Volunteers' uptempo game style, noting the teams' ability to create space, rebounding, and pressurize key players. With that, she highlights the key factors Gamecocks will have to tick off in order to emerge victorious.
"There's certain things that we need to take care of, one the ball, two is defending our turnovers if we do turn the ball over, three is obviously transition and the three-point line," she said (Timestamp: 1:40).
"Of course, we got to defend. Although, you're not going to disrupt them so much because they space you out. We got to handle being able to guard one-on-one."
The Gamecocks will end January's play after facing Tennesse. The team will host Auburn on Feb. 1 before a two-game road trip to Georgia and Texas.
