After the win over Indiana, UCLA juniors Lauren Betts and Kiki Rice along with coach Cori Close shared their thoughts. At Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall on Saturday, the No. 1 Bruins beat the Hoosiers 73-62 to remain undefeated.
Betts led the Bruins with a game-high 25 points — her second-best scoring output of the season — and also grabbed 12 rebounds, marking her ninth double-double and second straight.
Meanwhile, Rice, an All-Pac-12 guard, added 12 points, seven rebounds and seven assists as UCLA improved to 15-0 overall and 4-0 in the conference play.
Coach Cori Close addressed the team's performance after the win.
"I was really impressed with our team," Close said (0:34). "I've been really challenging them recently to be willing to win ugly, to be willing to win in a gritty way and not a pretty way.
"This wasn't our best day, but I thought the way they responded to adversity and were willing to just win ugly, I'm impressed with their growth and maturity in that area."
She also praised Lauren Betts' defensive work, which limited Indiana to just 62 points after they had averaged over 80 per game in the last three games.
"Lauren just is really difficult. She's able to switch out and be mobile laterally when we need her to," the coach added (1:26).
"The two things that they really make a living on are their shuffle picks and back picks, and the 3-point shot. We were able to go over the top and funnel everything, and Lauren was able to help on all those picks."
Lauren Betts and Kiki Rice reflect on the Big Ten road win
The two Bruins standouts, Lauren Betts and Kiki Rice, also shared their thoughts on the victory over the Hoosiers.
"I think the second half, I just focused on trying to get as deep as possible on my seals, and I thought they were doing a really good job of pushing me out as much as they could," Betts said (3:58).
"But yeah, it definitely was a physical game today, but I think we figured out how to work around it."
A reporter asked Rice about her experience on the road matchup in the Big Ten conference.
"This was definitely one of the places I was very excited to come to and play at Assembly Hall," the Maryland native said (5:02).
"Obviously, a super historical basketball arena, and when we came out there for warm-ups and when the game started, it was just like an electric environment and the energy was great."
Lauren Betts and Kiki Rice have been key contributors for the Bruins this season as the UCLA Bruins aim to maintain their perfect record. Betts leads the team in scoring (19.7 ppg) and rebounding (10.0 rpg), while Rice is behind her in scoring (13.2 ppg) and tops the team in blocks (2.1 per game).
