RJ Davis scripted history in UNC's game against Notre Dame on Jan. 4 despite having an off-color afternoon. The Tar Heels' star guard became the second-highest all-time scorer in UNC history, surpassing Armando Bacot's total of 2,347 points, which he amassed over five years at Chapel Hill.
Soon after the Tar Heels' narrow victory over the Fighting Irish, Bacot shared a story on Instagram to celebrate Davis' historic achievement, expressing his joy for the graduate student with two simple words.
"My dog," wrote Bacot.
Armando Bacot etched his name into the record books during his stint with the Tar Heels from 2019 to 2024. While he lost his second-place spot on the all-time scorers list, he still holds the all-time UNC record for rebounds (1,715), offensive rebounds (593) and double-doubles (87).
In fact, his 87 double-doubles are tied for the most in ACC history and second-most in NCAA history, records which he shares with San Antonio Spurs legend Tim Duncan, who averaged 13.9 points and 10.1 rebounds as a Tar Heel.
Despite his impressive stats, Bacot failed to get drafted in the 2024 NBA draft. He signed with the Utah Jazz for the NBA Summer League but was waived after his 10-day contract expired.
He then signed a 10-day contract with the Memphis Grizzlies on Sept. 6, 2024, before heading to the NBA G League as a player for the Memphis Hustle after the Grizzlies waived him on Oct. 19.
RJ Davis is over 500 points away from top spot in UNC’s all-time scorers list
The current leader of UNC’s all-time scorers list is Tyler Hansbrough, who racked up 2,872 points during his time at Chapel Hill from 2005 to 2009.
RJ Davis' tally after the Tar Heels' game against the Fighting Irish stands at 2,353 points, and he will need to average well over 30 points a game to catch up to Hansbrough with the games remaining in the regular season.
RJ Davis finished with eight points but dished out seven assists in his 36-minute performance against Notre Dame. Elliot Cadeau turned out to be the Tar Heels' hero, coming up with a four-point play with 4.8 seconds to go to give them a narrow 74-73 victory over the Fighting Irish.
