The No. 8 Florida Gators may have just accomplished their biggest win of the 2024-2025 season earlier on Tuesday. Not only did they defeat the No. 1 Tennessee Volunteers, but the 14-1 overall squad did so in dominant fashion winning by 30 big points, 73-43, as they shocked the program that has held the top spot for a little over a month now.
Now with their first win of the SEC in their hands, the Gators can credit the avalanche of defense they poured onto the previously undefeated Volunteers that paved them to the huge upset. There's no doubt now that the team will have a higher ranking in succeeding AP polls.
To Tennessee's dismay, however, they were on the wrong side of history. Them losing by 30 is the first time any unbeaten No. 1 team has lost by over 25 markers since 1968.
Both the Florida faithful and college basketball fans all over X/Twitter have since gone crazy over the Gators' awe-inspiring performance on Jan. 7 as they have now become the team to beat in the conference.
"Looks like the Gators didn't just bite. They absolutely chomped history into the record books," one fan said.
"Florida doing Florida things," another fan said.
"What a stat! Crazy good win for Florida. SEC road wins will be sparce," a fan said.
"1 week into the new year and the number 1 CFB and CBB team both get blown out lol," one fan posted.
"1968?!?! Something only Tennessee could do," another fan wrote.
Now equipped with a 1-1 conference standing thus far, the Gators will look to carry on the momentum in their Saturday matchup against the Arkansas Razorbacks. The Volunteers, meanwhile, will aim to bounce back against the Texas Longhorns on the same day.
Alijah Martin says it was all about a tough mentality with win over a team like Tennessee
Right after the impressive performance displayed by the Gators, fifth-year standout Alijah Martin sat down at the announcers' table to answer a few questions from ESPN's in-game commentators. When asked about the toughness the senior brings to a team like Florida, Martin said it's everything he embodies when he guns for a win.
"It's an everyday thing. It's just my character. What I came up from, how I had to get here, that's just how it happened. As a leader, I wanna make sure that everybody is locked in and tough," Martin said.
Martin finished the matchup with a team-high 18 points to go along with six rebounds, an assist and two steals. As a transferee from the Florida Atlantic Owls, he is currently averaging 15.9 markers, 5.6 boards, 2.9 dimes and 1.9 steals per game this season.
