College basketball fans were in awe of another jaw-dropping performance by Notre Dame superstar guard Hannah Hidalgo, drawing comparisons with former Philadelphia 76ers great and Georgetown point guard Allen Iverson and USC scoring wizard JuJu Watkins.
Hidalgo dropped 24 points, on 8-of-20 shooting, including 5-of-9 from the 3-point area, and 3-of-4 from free throws to lead the No. 3-ranked Fighting Irish to a 76-66 win over No. 17 ranked North Carolina in an ACC game on Sunday at the Carmichael Arena in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
It was the seventh-straight 20-plus game for the 5-foot-6 sophomore guard who continues to build her case for postseason women's college basketball honors with a stellar outing against an opponent listed in this week's AP Top 25 poll. Hidalgo also came up with three rebounds, five assists and three steals in 36 minutes for the Fighting Irish.
Fans admired the Merchantville, New Jersey native's scoring arsenal, speediness, fast hands and nifty playmaking. They compared her with former NBA MVP Allen Iverson, who played 7.9 miles away in Philadelphia.
A fan on X wrote that Hidalgo is the female counterpart of the high-scoring point guard who's also known by his initials "AI."
"Just watched some of this game today and I'ma just say she's a female version of Iverson to me 🏀," the college basketball fan said.
Other college hoops enthusiasts matched her up with a fellow guard and USC superstar JuJu Watkins. Some are even looking forward to a rematch in this year's NCAA Tournament.
"Her and juju going crazy this year," a fan wrote.
"That juju and hidalgo rematch is going to be generational," an X user added.
Some fans gave Hannah Hidalgo the Naismith Player of the Year award with only a third of the season completed.
"NPOY! Light work," a fan declared.
"The best player rn 💪🏾💪🏾," another user added.
"@HannahHidalgo 1 of 1 … You big time," a basketball fanatic opined.
Another fan wanted Hannah Hidalgo to be the future of three-time WNBA champions, the L.A. Sparks.
"Future @LASparks SPARK 🔥," the fan wrote.
Hannah Hidalgo-led Notre Dame is poised to secure a trip to the 2025 NCAA Tournament
With how the stars align for Hannah Hidalgo and Notre Dame, the spitfire guard is poised to secure a ticket to the 2025 NCAA Tournament and possibly gain the nod from basketball experts as the National Women's Basketball Player of the Year.
Hidalgo has consistently led the Fighting Irish's offense, producing 26.0 points per game (No. 2 in the nation). She's the nation's top swiper at 4.1 steals per contest and has good numbers in rebounds (6.4/game) and assists (3.7/game).
Her production alone stands out; she could be the conference player of the year and an All-American when the postseason arrives. Hidalgo could even break into the conversation of the Naismith Women's College Player of the Year if she keeps her stats up and leads the Fighting Irish deep into March Madness.
With Hannah Hidalgo, Olivia Miles, Sonia Citron and Liatu King leading the charge, Notre Dame had already served notice this season, beating erstwhile No. 2 UConn, No. 4 Texas and No. 3 USC Trojans. Its 76-66 conquest of No. 17 North Carolina makes it four AP Top 25 teams beaten this season, proving its worth as one of the teams to beat.
