Washington Huskies almost handed Kim Mulkey’s LSU their first defeat of the season, but Flau'jae Johnson and Kailyn Gilbert's late heroics saw the Tigers prevail 68-67 in a hard-fought battle.
Johnson, a junior guard, posted on X/Twitter shortly after the game, sharing her thoughts on the game and giving a shoutout to Gilbert. She quoted a post from Women's Hoop Network that featured highlights of Johnson from the matchup on Monday night in the Bahamas.
"KG !!! Wasn’t pretty but that’s what resilience looks like.. back to the drawing board," Flau'jae wrote.
Johnson had 19 points, four rebounds, four steals and two assists in the win, while Gilbert scored 8 points and grabbed 3 rebounds off the bench.
Washington came out of the gates hot, taking a 13-point lead in the first quarter. The Huskies led for most of the game, but the Lady Tigers fought back hard throughout.
Washington held a three-point lead, 67-64, with a minute left on the clock. But Flau'jae Johnson scored a clutch layup with 44 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to one and Gilbert's layup in the final second gave LSU the dramatic victory.
The Tigers' Aneesah Morrow and Sa'Myah Smith both posted double-doubles, with Morrow recording 19 points and 13 rebounds and Smith tallying 16 points and 15 boards. Washington's sophomore guard Sayvia Sellers led the game in scoring with 24 points.
Flau'jae Johnson leads LSU in scoring
With seven games into the 2024-25 season, the LSU Tigers have established Flau'jae Johnson as their primary scoring threat.
After last season's top scorer, Angel Reese departed for the WNBA and Hailey Van Lith transferred to TCU, there were questions as to who would fill the scoring void and Johnson has more than answered the call.
The 5-foot-10 guard from Savannah, Georgia is averaging 23.3 points and 7.7 rebounds per game for the Tigers, including four 25-point performances.
"I've just been trying to get after it. I feel like I kind of just got to lead with my energy so I been doing everything just at an intense level, at a high level. That's what I've been doing," Flau'jae said after the win against Charleston.
Flau'jae Johnson made a massive jump from her sophomore year to junior year, increasing her scoring average from 14.9 ppg to 23.3 ppg. This season, she shot 55.7% from the field and 42.6% from the 3-point line compared to 50.4% and 38.0% as a sophomore.
