Flau'jae Johnson's mom, Kia Brooks, shared her reaction after legendary football coach Nick Saban expressed his regret about leaving the LSU Tigers for the Miami Dolphins. During a conversation with Ryan Clark on the "Pivot" podcast, Saban admitted that, despite appreciating the talent and prestige of the NFL, he prefers mentoring young players and guiding them toward success.
Brooks used the opportunity to give a shoutout to Louisiana State University by reposting Saban's clip on her Instagram story:
"@lsu baby !!" she wrote.
Nick Saban further shared that his agent, Jimmy Sexton, played a significant role in his decision, asking whether he wanted a legacy like Vince Lombardi or Bear Bryant. Lombardi is known for excellence, discipline and dominant winning runs at the highest level, leading the Green Bay Packers to five NFL championships in nine years.
On the other hand, Bryant's legacy is tied to building strong programs, adapting to the evolution of the sport, and developing notable players, winning six NCAA titles spread evenly across two decades.
Despite aligning himself more with Bear Bryant's legacy, Saban ultimately chose to join the Dolphins.
Flau'jae Johnson nears her revenge game
On Mar. 10, 2024, Flau'jae Johnson and the Tigers faced an undefeated South Carolina in the SEC Championship game. Although the Gamecocks secured the victory with a 79-72 win, the game was marked by a controversial moment.
Johnson, who bumped Ashlyn Watkins on the way to the bench, was rushed by 6-foot-7 Kamilla Cardoso and shoved to the floor. A total of six players, including Johnson, were ejected from the game as Dawn Staley's team led 73-66 with 2:08 remaining on the clock.
Despite USC's seven-point victory, Johnson's presence could have provided LSU with more opportunities to mount a comeback in the final minutes.
Johnson will get her chance at redemption on Friday when the Tigers take their undefeated season record to the Colonial Life Arena. It will be the team's toughest game of the season, as Kim Mulkey's roster has only faced two ranked contests so far.
